Apostolic Activities of the CM
10. The Congregation of the Mission from the time of its Founder, and under his inspiration, sees itself called by God to carry out the work of evangelizing the poor. In its own way, it can, with the whole Church, state of itself that evangelizing is to be considered its grace and vocation, and expresses its deepest identity (cf. EN, 14). furthermore, the members, individually and collectively, can rightly make use of the words of Jesus :"I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God for which I have been sent" (Lk 4:43). Vincent had little patience for empty speculation. In terms of service of the poor he clearly looked to the bottom line of action.
"Let us love God but let it be with the sweat of our brows and the strength of our arms." His genius also lay in his ability to not only be a servant himself but also to enlist others into such service.
He was also "creative unto infinity" breaking boundaries in inventing new ways to serve. He made it possible for women to serve outside convents and anticipated the Second Vatican Council's call to the laity, a call so marvelously embodied by Frederic Ozanam and his followers in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul as well as the Confraternities of Charity.
