Gather Together Two or Three in Jesus’ Name

Jesus is always in his Church. Yes, he is in the midst of those who gather together in his name by the initiative of Providence.

Jesus wants us disciples to know that we shall receive for sure what we pray for, but on one condition: we will have to agree on what to pray for. And he is the one that makes effective our coming to agree on what to ask for. For where two or three gather together in his name, there he is in their midst.

And such words give new strength to those of us who shrink in the face of failures. In the face also of polarizations, abuses, scandals and injustices in the society and the Church. For, yes, what counts most is that he is with us as we gather together in his name. Though we may be no more than two or three.

Truly alive and really staying with us, he lifts up our spirits, leads us and holds us up. He gives meaning even to our failures and makes us weak ones strong. And he lets us know that those who make up his Church are not just those who exercise authority. For they are the Church, too, those little folks who believe simply and do not analyze things too much (SV.EN XI:190). In fact, the Church thrives at its roots in the lives of these little folks.

We, then, should not just associate the Church with what we used to associate it before: churchgoers in great number that gather together in big and beautiful churches, who are in awe of solemn celebrations. In awe, too, of silken garments and golden chalices. Rather, we are to bear in mind the few lowly folks who gather together in a tiny chapel. Or at home or on a open grain field. Most likely, they do not adorn churches, yet they surely reach out to afflicted brothers and sisters.

Lord Jesus, grant that we always gather together in your name and have you in our midst. We shall, then, catch your Spirit and be of one mind and heart, so that there may not be a poor brother or sister among us. Nourish us with your Word and with your Body and Blood, so that we may find cure for our faults and have the strength to work with you to build a more just and human world.

Reunirnos dos o tres en nombre de Jesús

Jesucristo está siempre en su Iglesia. Está él, sí, en medio de los que logramos reunirnos en su nombre por la gracia de Dios.

Quiere Jesús que los discípulos tomemos por cierto que se nos dará lo que pidamos, pero con una condición: tendremos que ponernos de acuerdo para pedirlo. Y él es el que hace que sea eficaz el ponernos de acuerdo. Pues reunirnos dos o tres en su nombre quiere decir estar él en medio de nosotros.

Y tales palabras de Jesús nos dan nuevas fuerzas a los que nos encogemos antes los fracasos. También ante las facciones, los abusos, los escándalos y las injusticias que hay en la sociedad y la Iglesia. Pues, sí, lo que más cuenta es que esté él con nosotros al reunirnos en su nombre. Aun seamos dos o tres no más.

Él vive, de verdad, y se queda con nosotros de modo real; nos anima él, guía y sostiene. Da sentido él aun a nuestros fracasos y nos hace fuertes a los débiles. Y nos da a conocer que su Iglesia no se limita a los que lideran a los demás. Pues son la Iglesia también los pequeños que creen de forma sencilla y no hurgan (SV.ES XI:120). De hecho, en la vida de ellos echa raíces hondas, crece y florece la Iglesia.

Por lo tanto, no hay que asociar la Iglesia con lo que la asociábamos antes: un gran número de feligreses que no dejamos de reunirnos en grandes y hermosas Iglesias, asombrados por los ritos solemnes. Y también por los lienzos de seda y los vasos de oro. Más bien, hemos de tomarnos en cuenta a nosotros mismos, si es que pocos podemos reunirnos en una ermita no más. O en casa o en un campo de trigo o arroz. No, los pequeños no adornamos las iglesias, pero no le tenemos en poco tampoco a un hermano o hermana pobre.

Señor Jesús, concédenos lograr siempre reunirnos en tu nombre y tenerte a ti en medio de nosotros. Nos contagiaremos así de tu Espíritu y seremos de un solo pensar y sentir, para que ya no haya entre nosotros ningún hermano o hermana pobre. Nútrenos con tu Palabra y con tu Cuerpo y Sangre, para que hallemos un remedio para nuestros pecados y cobremos fuerzas para obrar contigo por un mundo más justo y humano.
