Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A-2017
- Name that is above every other name
Christ is the reason why his followers bear the name of Christians. They are other Christs, then, anointed to announce repentance and the kingdom of God.
Jesus assures those who gather in his name and pray together that they will receive what they ask. And it will be so since he will be with them, making sure every request is according to God’s will. Yes, God hears the pleas of those who are attuned to Jesus who came down from heaven to do God’s will.
So, to gather together in the name of Jesus is not only to be with Jesus. It is also to do the will of God. In fact, doing God’s will proves we are together in Jesus’ name and live by his living and loving presence.
Besides, we who invoke the name of Christ become perfect as we conform our will to God’s will (SV.EN XI:285-287). And really, better than the practice of the presence of God is the practice of doing God’s will. That is because the latter embraces the former.
And it will do us good to keep asking (SV.EN XI:314): “Lord, if you were in my place, how would you act …? How would you instruct these people? How would you console this sick person …?”
To make our own the name of Christ means to commit to follow him. He has come to call sinners
God wants everyone to be saved and come to know the truth. This truth is about the one God, and the one mediator between God and human beings, Christ. And so, according to the will of the one who has sent him, the one mediator seeks the salvation of all. Of course, he does not want to lose even one of those the Father has given him.
No, the love and obedience of Jesus cannot bear to lose anyone. And the Teacher decidedly shows he is the concerned keeper of his brothers and sisters. For love of the least of them, he denounces the injustice, hypocrisy, duplicity or greed those in authority display.
And Jesus does not want those identifying with his name to abuse their authority. That is why he instructs them in such a way that no accuser may turn at once judge, jury and executioner. There is to be no such abuse, then, among those who have his name. He does not condemn but saves. His words to the woman caught in adultery give us sinners hope, “Go, and from now on do not sin.”
Lord Jesus, make us honor your name through our concern for our brothers and sisters. May we help them on the way to salvation. You feed us with your flesh and blood; may we too have our fill doing the will of the Father.

- Nombre sobre todo nombre
Cristo es la razón por la que llevan sus seguidores el nombre de cristianos. Otros Cristos son ellos, ungidos para anunciar la conversión y el reino de Dios.
Asegura Jesús que los reunidos en su nombre y concordes en la oración recibirán lo que pidan. Y así será porque él estará en medio de ellos, garantizando que toda petición sea según la voluntad divina. Atiende Dios, sí, a los suplicantes sintonizados con el que bajó del cielo para hacer la voluntad de Dios.
Reunirnos, pues, en nombre de Jesús no solo significa tener presente a Jesús, sino hacer también la voluntad de Dios. De hecho, haciéndola, nos aquilatamos reunidos en nombre de Jesús y viviendo de su presencia viva y amorosa.
Además, nos perfeccionamos los que invocamos el nombre de Cristo, conformando nuestra voluntad a la de Dios (SV.ES XI:211-213). Por consiguiente, mejor que la práctica de la presencia de Dios es la práctica de cumplir la voluntad de Dios. Es que ésta abraza a la otra.
Y nos hará bien seguir preguntando: «Señor, si estuvieras en mi lugar, ¿que harías …? ¿Como instruirías a este pueblo? Como consolarías a este enfermo …?» (SV.ES XI:240).
Apropiarnos del nombre de Cristo es comprometernos a seguirle. Ha venido él a llamar a los pecadores.
Quiere Dios que todos se salven y lleguen a conocer la verdad. Esa verdad se refiere a un solo Dios, y a un solo mediador entre Dios y los hombres, Cristo. Según la voluntad del que lo ha enviado, pues, el solo mediador busca la salvación de todos. No quiere perder ni a uno solo de los que el Padre le ha confiado.
No, no pueden soportar el amor y la obediencia de Jesús la perdición de nadie. El Maestro se revela decididamente como guardián preocupado de sus hermanos. Por amor a los más pequeños de ellos, denuncia la injusticia, hipocresía, doblez o codicia que despliegan las autoridades.
Y no quiere Jesús que los identificados con su nombre abusen de su autoridad. Por tanto, les instruye de tal forma que ningún acusador se haga a la vez juez, jurado y verdugo. Entre nosotros con nombre de Cristo, nada de este abuso. No condena él, sino salva. A los pecadores nos infunden esperanza sus palabras a la sorprendida en adulterio: «Anda y adelante no peques más».
Haz, Señor Jesús, que honremos tu nombre, preocupándonos de nuestros hermanos y ayudándoles en el camino de salvación. Nos alimentas con tu carne y sangre; que también nos saciemos haciendo la voluntad de Padre.
