Inside the Heart Lies What Is Crucial

Jesus invites us to learn from him, for he is meek and humble of heart. We show that we are true or false disciples by what comes out from inside our hearts.

The Pharisees and the scribes question the religious observance of Jesus’ disciples. And he, who knows what is inside everyone’s heart, answers the inquisitors right away. He calls them hypocrites, for they honor God with their lips, but their hearts are far from him. And their religion is false, since they put human traditions and rules above God’s commandments.

In other words, the Pharisees and scribes are whitewashed tombs, beautiful on the outside. But inside they are full of dead people’s bone and filth. The Pharisees and scribes appear righteous on the outside. Inside, however, they are full of hypocrisy and malice.

So then, as Jesus makes clear later, what is crucial is what is in our hearts. From there come things that tell whether we belong to him or not.

And they belong to Jesus, for sure, those who do nothing out of selfishness or in order to show off. Humble of heart, they see others as more important than themselves. They are not at all like those who come inquiring with malice. These ones only want to show that they are above those who do not keep the traditions of the elders. And they are jockeying for positions of power.

Moreover, the meekness inside those who belong to Jesus shows itself in their approachability. The words that come from inside them cleanse and soothe. A good word, from the heart, is enough to bring to God even the most annoying (SV.EN X:268). Their words unite rather than divide, even when they call a spade a spade. Of course, they do not lie to keep hiding the evil inside.

Jesus’ own also look out for others’ interests. Their religion is pure: they care for the needy; the world of greed, oppression and exploitation does not defile them.

Lord Jesus, you offer us your body and blood. Make us receive you. For otherwise, we will not have life inside us.

VERSIÓN ESPAÑOLA

Dentro del corazón se encuentra lo decisivo

Jesús nos llama a aprender de él, pues es manso y humilde de corazón. Por lo que sale de dentro de nuestros corazones nos revelamos o verdaderos o falsos discípulos.

Ponen en cuestión los fariseos y los escribas la observancia religiosa de los discípulos de Jesús. Y éste, que sabe lo que hay dentro de cada persona, responde en seguida a los inquisidores. Les llama hipócritas, pues honran a Dios con los labios, pero sus corazones están lejos de él. Y falsa les resulta su religión, poniendo ellos tradiciones y preceptos humanos por encima de los mandamientos de Dios.

Es decir, son sepulcros blanqueados los fariseos y los escribas, hermosos por fuera. Pero por dentro están llenos de huesos de los muertos y podredumbre. Los fariseos y los escribas parecen ser justos por fuera. Por dentro, sin embargo, están llenos de codicia y de maldad.

Así que, como aclara Jesús luego, lo decisivo es lo que guardamos en nuestros corazones. De ahí salen las cosas que indican si somos de él o no.

Y pertenecen seguramente a Jesús los que no obran por egoísmo o por ostentación. Humildes de corazón, consideran siempre superiores a los demás. No son de ninguna manera como los que vienen a inquirir con malicia. Éstos buscan mostrarse superiores a los que no siguen la tradición de los mayores. Y están maniobrando para colocarse en puestos de poder.

Además, la mansedumbre de los de Jesús se manifiesta en su accesibilidad. Las palabras que salen de dentro de si mismos purifican y tranquilizan. Una palabra que sale del corazón es suficiente para llevar a Dios incluso a los más enfadadosos (SV.ES IX: 916). Sus palabras llevan a la unión, no a la división, aun cuando llaman al pan pan y al vino vino. No mienten, desde luego, para seguir encumbriendo la maldad que hay dentro.

Los de Jesús buscan también los intereses de los demás. Es pura su religión: atienden a los necesitados; no se dejan manchar por el mundo de codicia, opresión y explotación.

Señor Jesús, entregas tu cuerpo y derramas tu sangre por nosotros. Haz que comulguemos. De lo contrario, no tendremos vida dentro de nosotros.
