Knowledge of Christ is what matters above all. Those who know him receive in trust keys of authority to serve others faithfully and caringly.
The Father, Lord of heaven and earth, gives to the childlike the knowledge he hides from those who are wise. Peter is among the childlike. Or else, he would not know nor confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.
The knowledge and confession of Peter are right by the grace of God. But grace does not do away with nature.
Acknowledging that, like children, he lacks knowledge, Peter does not close himself to what learned people say who Jesus is. In the first place, then, could Peter’s openness not make for his receiving the revealing grace of God?
In the second place, the promise of Jesus shows that divine grace implies human cooperation. Yes, he promises to Peter, “Upon this rock I will build my church.” In doing so, he confirms the name of Peter and explains besides its fuller sense.
But the promise to the one who has just affirmed the true identity of Jesus does not come to facile fulfillment. It will become clear later that the true confessor needs to cooperate further. He still has to keep an open mind, heeding the teachings of Jesus to have the necessary knowledge.
Without knowledge of the true Jesus, we turn into stumbling blocks.
It does not take the foundation stone too long to become a stumbling stone. That is how easily we can end up putting in doubt our knowledge and confession as people Jesus has called together. And this can happen to us quickly if we do not know him because we do not know the Gospels.
Among other things, then, we must know the true Christ of the Gospels. Our knowledge of the real Jesus will spur us to conform to him and his Good News. It will also lead us to deem everything as rubbish, compared to him and his teachings.
Moreover, the example and teachings of Jesus will never let us down and will make us as firm as the rock (CRCM II:1). They will likewise convince us that Christian authority does not consist in being served but in serving. Consequently, we will prove that we know and follow Jesus by serving others faithfully and caringly.
Lord Jesus, make us, who received the grace of knowledge of you, faithful stewards of the mysteries of the kingdom. Gird yourself someday, make us seat at table and go on to wait on us.

El conocimiento de Cristo es lo que cuenta sobre todo. A cuantos lo conocen se les confía la autoridad para servir a los demás fiel y solícitamente.
A la gente sencilla da el Padre, Señor de cielo y tierra, el conocimiento que esconde a los sabios. De esa gente forma parte Pedro. De lo contrario, no conocería él ni confesaría a Jesús como el Mesías y el Hijo de Dios vivo.
El apóstol acierta, pues, en su conocimiento y su confesión por la gracia de Dios. Pero la gracia no prescinde de la naturaleza.
Reconociéndose de poco conocimiento cual los pequeños, Pedro no se cierra a lo que dicen de Jesús las personas entendidas. En primer lugar, pues, ¿no será por su actitud abierta que quede predispuesto el apóstol a la gracia reveladora de Dios?
En segundo lugar, la promesa de Jesús indica que la gracia divina supone la cooperación humana. Promete, sí, a Pedro: «Sobre esta piedra edificaré mi Iglesia». Así se le confirma a Pedro su nombre y se le desarrolla además el sentido más pleno de su nombre.
Pero la promesa al que acaba de afirmar la identidad verdadera de Jesús no se cumple fácilmente. Quedará claro, más adelante, que al confesor correcto aún se le requiere la cooperación. Debe mantenerse con una mente abierta y atenta a las instrucciones del Maestro para conseguir el conocimiento necesario.
Sin el conocimiento del verdadero Jesús, nos convertimos en piedras de tropiezo.
No tarda la piedra fundacional en hacerse piedra de tropiezo. Así de fácil podemos acabar también poniendo en duda nuestro conocimiento y nuestra confesión como convocados por Jesús. Y no difícilmente nos pasará esto si, ignorando los Evangelios, ignoramos a Cristo.
Entre otras cosas, pues, es preciso que nos imbuyamos del conocimiento del verdadero Cristo de los santos Evangelios. El conocimiento del verdadero Jesús nos impulsará a conformarnos a él y a las máximas evangélicas. Nos llevará también a dar todo por basura en comparación con Jesús y su Buena Noticia.
Además, su ejemplo y sus enseñanzas nunca engañarán y nos harán tan firmes como la roca (RCCM II:1). Nos dejarán convencidos asimismo de que la autoridad cristiana no consiste en ser servido sino en servir. Por tanto, nos acreditaremos conocedores y seguidores de Jesús mediante nuestro servicio fiel y solícito de los demás.
Señor Jesús, concédenos a los favorecidos con conocimiento de ti ser fieles y solícitos dispensadores de los misterios del reino. Así te ceñirás un día, nos harás sentar a la mesa y nos irás sirviendo.
