Burn with Zeal for the Kingdom of God

Jesus cannot but burn with zeal for God’s kingdom. For he has come to proclaim it, to bring it in, and to bring it about to the full.

In many places, trees, houses and other things burn in fires. We are sorry, of course, for the deaths, losses and harm that fires cause. And so that we may not feel so bad, we try maybe to think that there is a silver lining in this. For indeed, there is good that comes out of, say, forest fires.

And, as one can see, fires give rise to thoughts on being a Christian. And these thoughts tie well with what Jesus says to us today.

Today, we hear him say:

    I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!  There is a baptism with which
    I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished!

But others say that the Greek text should read, in English, “How I wish it were already blazing!” It should be, rather, “What more do I want if it is already kindled!” Hence, it is not clear if the fire does burn already or has yet to burn.

There are those, though, who point out that Jesus speaks as a prophet. That is why there is light and shadow, too, in what he says (Comentarios al evangelio 1). This means that what he says draws and awes at the same time. It stays in the mind and makes the hearers think it through to grasp it.

And Jesus shows that he is eager, thrilled, full of passion, zeal and purpose. Not only does he not fear baptism, death; he cannot wait till it comes true. It is as though he cries out like a woman in labor, he gasps and pants.

To burn or not to burn with zeal, that is the question.

Jesus says, besides, “Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” No, Jesus does not say it will be easy to follow him to the end, to giving up the body and shedding blood. And he, the “Sign of Contradiction” tells us the truth so that we may be ready to face conflict. For, indeed, to tell the truth, as Jeremiah, and to do good, is to court conflict (SV.EN I:75).

But Jesus tells us the truth, too, so that we make up our minds. Moses, Joshua and Elijah did so, too, with Israel.

Yes, Jesus asks us to make up our minds. Follow him and burn with zeal, as he, and change deeply and wholly. Or settle down and stay not hot nor cold, catch the “vice of churchmen” (SV.EN VIII:126) and clericalism, be a “museum Church”.

Seek first the kingdom of God, and foster justice, mercy, faith, fellowship, peace? Or worry to death about our needs? About having the glory of this world, and end up vain, empty, while sin still clings to us?

Which will we choose? Do we meet Jesus’ challenge?

Lord Jesus, make us burn with zeal for God’s kingdom and take up your cup and your baptism. Open our eyes and hearts so we may grasp that to have our fill means to hunger and thirst with you. That glory is the cross, and that to be God is to be you, human to the utmost.

Arder en celo por el reino de Dios

Jesús no puede sino arder en celo por el reino de Dios. Pues ha venido para proclamarlo, iniciarlo y llevarlo a pleno cabo.

En muchos lugares, no terminan de arder en incendios los árboles, las casas y otras cosas. Nos dan lástima, por supuesto, la muerte, la pérdida y el daño que causan esos incendios. Y para consolarnos quizás nos decimos que no hay mal que por bien no venga. Pues, de verdad, los incendios forestales, por ejemplo, no dejan de traer beneficios.

Y, por lo visto, también pueden llevar los incendios a que se reflexione en serio sobre el ser cristiano. Y la reflexión que resulta se asocia, sí, con lo que nos dice Jesús hoy.

Hoy, le oímos decir:

    venido a prender fuego en el mundo, y ¡ojalá estuviera ya ardiendo!  Tengo que pasar por un bautismo,
    y ¡qué angustia hasta que se cumpla!

Pero dicen unos que el texto griego no se ha de rendir en español: «¡Ojalá ya estuviera ardiendo», sino: «¡Qué más quiero, si ya se ha prendido!». No, no se nos queda claro si el fuego está aún por arder o ya no deja de arder.

Se dice también que habla Jesús como profeta. Es por eso que lo que dice él es claroscuro (Comentarios al evangelio 1). Esto quiere decir que sus dichos atraen y espantan a la vez. Y se les graban en la mente a los que los oyen y les hace ponderarlos para captarlos.

Y se ve Jesús con mucha ilusión, emoción, pasión, celo, motivación. No solo no tiene él miedo al bautismo, a la muerte; no puede esperar hasta que se cumpla. Es como si él gritara, jadeara y resollara al igual que una mujer cuando da a luz.

Arder o no arder de celo, ésa es la cuestión.

Dice también Jesús: «¿Pensáis que he venido a traer al mundo paz? No, sino división.». No, no dice él que nos será fácil seguirle hasta el fin, hasta entregar el cuerpo y derramar la sangre. Y él, la «Señal de contradicción», nos dice la verdad, para que estemos listos para hacer frente a los conflictos. Pues, de verdad, ser veraz, al igual que Jeremías, y hacer el bien es exponerse a conflictos (SV.ES I:143).

Pero también nos dice Jesús la verdad para que nos decidamos. Lo mismo hicieron Moisés, Josué y Elías con Israel.

Sí, Jesús exige que nos decidamos. O seguirle nosotros y arder con él en celo para que nos transformemos de forma profunda y total. O instalarnos y quedarnos tibios, contagiarnos con el «vicio de los eclesiásticos» (SV.ES VIII:100) y el clericalismo, hacernos una Iglesia de museo.

¿Buscar nosotros primero el reino de Dios, y procurar la justicia, la misericordia, la fe, la unidad, la paz? O, ¿afanarnos por sobrevivir? Y, ¿por lograr la gloria de este mundo y acabar vanos, vacíos, atados aún por el pecado?

¿Cuál, pues, vamos a escoger? ¿Estamos a la altura del reto de Jesús?

Señor Jesú, haznos arder en celo por el reino de Dios y recibir tu cáliz y tu bautismo. Ábrenos los ojos y el corazón para que captemos que la saciedad está en tener tu hambre y tu sed. Que la gloria es la cruz, y que ser Dios es ser tú, hombre a lo sumo.
