God-with-us in Our Joys and Our Griefs

Jesus, God-with-us, is the first of the brothers and sisters who rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.

There is a report that fewer folks in the U.S. believe in God and, one can guess, in God-with-us. For the number of believers in the U.S. is down to 58% from 68%, in 2001. Would it be out of place to ask if a theophany, much like Jesus’ transfiguration, might lift up those slow to believe?

One can say that the three witnesses of the Transfiguration are the pillars of the Church. But such distinction does not mean that their faith is strong. In fact, Peter finds hard to believe in a Messiah that suffers. As for James and John, after being there at the Transfiguration, they still cannot grasp this teaching: to be great means to serve others; to be first is to be the slave of all.

So, the Transfiguration, it seems, is not a prize for those of proven faith. It is a cure, rather, for those of weak faith. Seeing, though in a fleeting way, the splendor of God on the face of Jesus, the three find strength. So, their faith does not fail, and they will strengthen later their brothers and sisters. As Jesus does to them.

In his Transfiguration, yes, Jesus shows that he is God-with-us. He is with the faint of heart to make them strong. To get them to rejoice as those who go to the Feast of Booths. They rejoice, for they are God’s chosen. Jesus is with those, too, who have fallen to the ground and are afraid. He touches them to calm them down and make them rise.

But as the three look up, they see no one there but Jesus. They think no more of making three booths, of staying on the holy mountain, of which Peter says: “It is good for us to be here!” So, no one flees from one’s own surroundings.

Yet the bidding of the voice from the cloud still counts: “This is my Son whom I love and who please me well. Listen to him.” That is to say, it is Jesus who fulfills the law and the prophets, and the theophany on Sinai.

Hence, we are to listen to him more than to Moses and Elijah. For our distinctive trait as Christians is to listen to Jesus. To sit at his feet and listen to his words. So that we may know, as St. Vincent, to put the whole of the Good News into the whole of our lives (J. Delarue). And to address from the point of view of the Gospel the recurring questions that we ask about life (GS 4).

We should not stop at theophanies. Rather, we are to love with the strength of our arms and the sweat of our brow (SV.EN XI:32). We must not flee from where we are in the world.

Lord Jesus, you are God-with-us in a focused way in the Mass. For in it, you speak to us the words of life, you feed us who are hungry and thirsty, you make us, who are weak, strong, and you give us a pledge of the future glory that your passion hides. Grant us to live what we celebrate and to make our own the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties, of others.

Transfiguration of the Lord (A)

Dios-con-nosotros en los gozos y las tristezas

Jesús, Dios-con-nosotros, es el mayor de los hermanos y hermanas que se gozan con los que se gozan y lloran con los que lloran.

Se nos informa que menos personas en los EE.UU. creen en Dios y, por supuesto, en Dios-con-nosotros. Pues ha bajado de 68%, en 2001, a 58% el número de los creyentes en EE.UU. ¿Sería pertinente preguntar si les alentaría a los tardos para creer una teofanía parecida a la transfiguración de Jesús?

Se dice que los tres testigos de la Transfiguración son las columnas de la Iglesia. Pero esa distinción no quiere decir que son ellos de fe firme. De hecho, le cuesta a Pedro creer en un Mesías que sufre. Y en cuanto a Santiago y Juan, aun tras ver la Transfiguración, aún les resulta duro captar esta enseñanza: ser grande quiere decir servir a los demás; ser el primero es hacerse esclavo de todos.

Parece, por lo tanto, que la Transfiguración no es un premio para los de fe probada. Es, más bien, un remedio para los de fe débil. Viendo, aunque de forma fugaz, el resplandor de Dios en el rostro de Jesús, se alientan los tres. Así que su fe no falla, y confirmarán más tarde a sus hermanos y hermanas. Del mismo modo que lo hace Jesús con ellos.

En su Transfiguración, sí, Jesús se da a conocer como Dios-con-nosotros. Está con los pusilánimes para hacerlos fuertes. Para darles razón para que se sientan gozosos como los que asisten en la fiesta de las tiendas. Gozosos, pues son del pueblo elegido de Dios. Está Jesús también con los caídos rostro en tierra, llenos de espanto. Los toca para calmarlos y levantarlos.

Pero al alzar los ojos, los tres no ven a nadie más que a Jesús. Ya no se piensa en hacer ellos tres tiendas, en quedarse solos en el monte sagrado, del que se dice: «¡Qué bueno es estar aquí!». No se huye, pues, del propio ambiente.

Mas cuenta aún lo dicho por la voz de la nube: «Este es mi Hijo, el amado, mi predilecto. Escuchadlo.». Se nos da a conocer así que Jesús es el que cumple la ley y los profetas. El que da plenitud a la teofanía del Sinaí.

Por lo tanto, hay que escucharle a él más que a Moisés y a Elías. Pues lo propio de nosotros, los cristianos, es escucharle a Jesús. Estar a los pies de él y escuchar sus palabras. Para que sepamos, al igual que san Vicente, poner toda la Buena Noticia en toda nuestra vida (J. Delarue). Y abordar los perennes interrogantes de la humanidad desde la perspectiva del Evangelio (GS 4).

No hemos de detenernos en las teofanías. Nos toca, más bien, amar a costa de nuestros brazos y con el sudor de nuestra frente (SV.ES XI:733). No hemos de huir de nuestra situación en el mundo.

Señor Jesús, eres Dios-con-nosotros de modo concentrado en la Misa. Pues en ella, nos hablas las palabras de vida, nos nutres a los hambrientos y sedientos, nos fortaleces a los débiles, y nos das una prenda de la futura gloria que tu pasión encubre. Haz que vivamos lo que celebramos y que sean también de nosotros los gozos y las esperanzas, las tristezas y las angustias de los demás.
