Hear, the Lord our God is Lord Alone

Jesus embodies the one who created us, men and women, in his image, after his likeness. Rightly does he tell us, then, that to love and hear God is to love and hear the neighbor.

A scribe asks Jesus, “Which is the first of all the commandments?” And he answers that it is what the prayer Shema says, which begins, “Hear, O Israel!”

So, Jesus repeats the prayer. Then, he adds, “The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’” (Lv 19, 18). The scribes gets more than what he wants. In this way, Jesus highlights that the second commandment, which is like the first, is also important.

‘Like’ means, of course, that the first and the second are not the same. But ‘likeness’ does not only tell apart one from the other. It also suggests that we cannot set the second aside. Just as we cannot pass over those who bear the image of God and are like him.

For Jesus, that is to say, one cannot separate love of God and love of neighbor. To love and hear our Father also means to love and hear our neighbor.

And Jesus does what he says. That is why he stands out due to his reverence for God and his love for the neighbor (SV.EN VI:413).

In the first place, Jesus is an observant Jew. And since he cares about true worship, he throws out of the temple those who are all about business. For the same reason, he decries those who honor God only with their lips. And those, too, who disguise, before widows, their greed as worship. He is, besides, against those who, for the sake of the Sabbath, stand idly by when they can save life.

God does hear the cries of the poor; we are to do the same.

So, in the second place, Jesus wills the good of others. And how does he love? The gospels count for us the ways. Mt 4, 23 sums it up (see also 9, 39; Mc 1, 39; Lc 4, 15. 44). He goes about towns and villages to teach in synagogues and proclaim the Good News of the kingdom. Also, he cures the diseases and illnesses among the people.

Besides, he loves us so much that, following God’s providence, he offers himself to him for us. And since this is key, we can never repeat it enough.

Yes, that is how Jesus loves. In inventive ways also, of course (SV.EN XI:131). And he wants his own to love so too. But not only the Christians, but also those who are not Christians. For, at the end, he says to the scribe, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” He lets us know in this way that to love as he is not the Christians’ alone.

All God’s children, yes, can worship and hear God in places of worship. In Jerusalem, in Mount Gerizim or in one of the seven hills of Rome. And if we worship him in Spirit and truth, we will discover that such worship commits us to the neighbor, to the poor in particular (CCC 1397). No doubt, there is such a thing as “to leave God for God.” And to worship Christ in the poor (SV.EN XI:26].

Lord, make our love for you grow to a perfect love, so that we love and hear our neighbor too.

Escucha, el Señor nuestro Dios es el solo Señor

Jesús encarna el amor de Dios que hombres y mujeres nos creó a su imagen y semejanza. Con razón dice Jesús, pues, que el que ama y escucha a Dios de verdad, ama y escucha también al prójimo.

Un escriba pregunta a Jesús: «¿Qué mandamiento es el primero de todos?». Y contesta él que el primero es lo que dice la oración Shemá que comienza así: «Escucha, Israel».

Repite, pues, Jesús la oración. A continuación, añade: «El segundo es éste: “Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”» (Lv 19, 18). Se le da al escriba más de lo que él desea. Y así se pone de relieve la importancia del segundo mandamiento que es semejante al primero.

«Semejante», por supuesto, indica que el segundo no es lo mismo que el primero. Pero «semejanza» no solo dice que se distingue el uno del otro. También da a entender que no se puede prescindir del segundo mandamiento. Así como no se puede prescindir tampoco de los que son imágenes de Dios y semejantes suyos.

Para Jesús, es decir, amar a Dios y amar al prójimo no son separables. No se ama ni se escucha a nuestro Padre si no se ama y escucha a un hermano o hermana.

Y hace Jesús lo que dice. Es por eso que se distingue él por su religión para con Dios y su amor para con el prójimo (SV.ES VI:370).

En primer lugar, sí, Jesús es judío observante. Y por preocuparse por el culto verdadero, echa del templo a los comerciantes. Por la misma razón, denuncia a los que honran a Dios solo con sus labios. Y también a los que, ante las viudas, disfrazan de culto su codicia, y rehúsan ayudar a sus padres. Se opone además a los que por guardar el sábado no hacen nada para salvar una vida.

Escucha Dios los gritos de los pobres; hemos de hacer lo mismo.

En segundo lugar, pues, Jesús busca el bien de los demás. Y, ¿de qué modo ama él? Y nos cuentan los evangelios las formas. Pero se resume su modo de amar en Mt 4, 23 (véase también 9, 39; Mc 1, 39; Lc 4, 15. 44). Recorre él pueblos y aldeas para enseñar en las sinagogas y proclamar el Evangelio del reino. También cura las enfermedades y dolencias del pueblo.

Él, además, nos ama tanto que, de acuerdo con la providencia de Dios, se le ofrece a él por nosotros. Y nunca será suficiente repetir esto por lo clave que es.

De tales formas, sí, ama Jesús. De formas inventivas también, por supuesto (SV.ES XI:65). Y así quiere él que los suyos amemos también. Pero no solo nosotros los cristianos, sino también los no cristianos. Es que, al final, dice Jesús al escriba: «No estás lejos del reino». De ese modo, se nos da a entender que amar al igual que él no es solo de los cristianos.

Todos los hijos e hijas de Dios, sí, somos capaces, por su gracia, de adorarle y escucharle en los santuarios. Ésten éstos en Jerusalén o en Gerizín o en una de las siete colinas de Roma. Y si le damos culto en Espíritu y verdad, descubriremos que tal culto entraña amor y escucha al prójimo. En particular, al pobre (véase CIC 1397). No cabe duda de que hay tal cosa como «dejar a Dios por Dios» (SV.ES IX:297). Y como adorar a Cristo en los pobres (SV.ES XI:725)

Señor Jesús, haz que nuestro amor y nuestra escucha al Padre se perfecionen de tal modo que abarquen al prójimo.
