Preach the Good News to the Poor

Jesus is the one the Lord God has anointed with the Holy Spirit and has sent to preach the Good News to the poor.

In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. And the sacred writers and wise holy men and women bring them to light for us to see. We give them thanks since they share and preach what the Holy Spirit lets them know.

But though we may learn well what they teach and dig in it deeply, none of it will be of use to us if we do not see Jesus as the Preacher of the Good News to the poor. Yes, he is, first of all, the one that goes about all of Galilee to preach the Good News of the kingdom. It does not bother him that he is with folks others hate. Folks that make up the Galilee of the Gentiles (see Jn 7, 52).

For Jesus, of course, to preach the Good News means to preach it “by words and works” (see SV.EN XII: 78). For he does not just teach in synagogues; he also heals those who are sick and who suffer (see also Acts 10, 38).

No, there is no doubt that Jesus helps those who are poor in every way: he takes care of them, he eases their suffering, be it of the soul or of the body. They see to it that others help them also in every way, too. That is why he calls Andrew and Simon, and James and John. And they, in turn, leave their nets, boats and their homes, and follow him.

To leave all to preach Christ on the cross

Jesus grants to those he calls and chooses, yes, to leave all to follow him. He also promises to them many happy returns in this age and in the age to come (Mk 10, 29-30). Hence, it is a sure thing that to be happy means to follow Jesus in serving those who are poor (SV.EN:384). This, of course, asks that we also let go of all, of our bodies and blood, too.

Are we of these called and chosen ones? Of those who mean to know nothing but Jesus and him crucified, so that the cross may not be empty of its meaning?

Lord Jesus, give us strength to be kind and understanding with those we meet so that we may thus get to be images of you and to preach the Good News.

Predicar la Buena Noticia a los pobres

Jesús es el Ungido con el Espíritu Santo y el Enviado del Señor para predicar la Buena Noticia a los pobres.

Se encierran en Cristo todos los tesoros de la sabiduría y del conocimiento. Y los sacan a la luz los escritores sagrados y los santos y santas doctores. Les damos gracias por compartir y predicar lo que les da a conocer el Espíritu Santo.

Pero por mucho que captemos lo que enseñan y nos adentremos en ello, nada nos valdrá todo si no tomamos a Jesús por el que predica la Buena Noticia a los pobres. Ante todo, sí, él es el que pasa por toda Galilea para predicar la Buena Noticia del reino. No le molesta que esté con gente a la que odian los demás. Gente de la Galilea de los gentiles (véase Jn 7, 52).

Y al predicar Jesús la Buena Noticia, no la deja de predicar, desde luego, «de palabra y de obra» (véase SV.EN XI:393). Pues no solo enseña él en las sinagogas; sana también a los enfermos y a los con dolencias (véase también Hch 10, 38).

No, no cabe duda de que ayuda él de todas las formas a los pobres: los cuida, los asiste en sus aflicciones de cuerpo y de alma. Procura también que los demás les ayuden de todos los modos. Es por eso que llama a Andrés y a Simón, y a Santiago y a Juan. Y ellos, a su vez, dejan sus redes, sus barcas y sus hogares, y lo siguen.

Dejarlo todo para predicar a Cristo en la cruz

A los llamados y también elegidos se les concede, sí, poder dejarlo todo para seguir al que los llama y elige. Se les promete también que se les bendecirá a ellos cien veces en este mundo y en el que viene (Mc 10, 29-30). Se nos da por cierto, por lo tanto, que ser feliz es seguir a Jesús su servir a los pobres (SV.ES III:359). Quiere decir esto, claro, que hemos de renunciar a nosotros mismos hasta entregar nuestros cuerpos y derramar nuestra sangre.

¿Somos de esos llamados y elegidos? ¿De los que no se precian de saber de nada, pues les basta con conocer a Jesucristo, y éste crucificado, para que su cruz se quede eficaz?

Señor Jesús, haz que seamos bondadosos y comprensivos con los que nos rodean para que logremos así reflejar tu bondad y predicar la Buena Noticia.
