Table to Which Jesus Invites us

Jesus gives us his flesh to eat and his blood to drink. To sit down at his table means to be one with him and with others.

Jesus tells the Jews, that is to say, the Jewish religious authorities, that the bread he will give is his flesh. This gives rise to a quarrel among them. And they end up saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” Maybe they cannot but imagine a disgusting table, sickening.

What they say brings to mind Nicodemus’ “How can one who is old be born again?” “How can …?” Thus do the guardians and defenders of the law react; they cannot break out of the mold.

They believe that God has made himself known once and for all in the law. Hence, he speaks to humans just through the law; it has the words of life. The words that come out of God’s mouth and by which humans live. That is to say, the law is the food from heaven. It is the food the Israelites share at the table their Shepherd sets for them right before their foes.

And Jesus agrees that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from God’s mouth. But he questions the claim that the law is God’s final and definitive word. For he, Jesus, proclaims that he is such word.

Yet the Word became flesh. It stands to reason, then, that Jesus teaches that the bread that he will give is his flesh. And so, to follow him means to find reason in what sickens those who cherish the law absolutely. To be his disciples also means to eat truly his flesh and to drink truly his blood. And we do so as we share the bread and wine of the Eucharist. So that we can be one Body, Spirit and Life with Christ who is one with the Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, make us, as we sit down at your table, watch carefully what you set before us (Office of Readings). For we, too, are to prepare the same kind of meal. That is to say, as you give us your flesh to eat and your blood to drink, so we ought to do the same for the sake of our brothers and sisters. And grant, besides, that as you carried out the Father’s work, so may we also trust Providence and carry out the things God shows us that he wants us to do (SV.EN XII:82).

Mesa a la que nos invita Jesús

Jesús nos da a comer su carne y a beber su sangre. Sentarse a la mesa de él quiere decir estar en comunión con él y con los demás.

Dice Jesús a los judíos, es decir, a las autoridades religiosas judías, que el pan que dará es su carne. Esto suscita una discusión entre ellos y terminan preguntándose: «Cómo puede éste darnos a comer su carne?». Quizá no se puedan sino imaginar una mesa asquerosa, abominable.

Tal pregunta nos recuerda la de Nicodemo: «¿Cómo puede uno nacer de nuevo cuando ya es viejo?». «¿Cómo puede …?». Así reaccionan los guardianes y los defensores de la ley.

Creen que Dios se ha revelado de una vez por todas en la ley. Por lo tanto, habla él a los hombres solo por medio de la ley; tiene ella las palabras de vida. Las palabras que salen de la boca de Dios y de las que vive el hombre. Es decir, la ley es el alimento bajado del cielo. El alimento que los israelitas comparten al sentarse a la mesa que su Pastor les prepara delante de los enemigos.

Y está de acuerdo Jesús en que no solo de pan vive el hombre, sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios. Pero dar por cierto que la ley es la palabra última y definitiva de Dios, esto lo cuestiona Jesús. Proclama éste que tal palabra es él.

Pero la Palabra se hizo carne. Con razón se enseña también, por lo tanto, que el pan que dará Jesús es su carne. Seguirle, entonces, es tomarlo por lógico lo que les da asco a los que valoran la ley de modo absoluto. Ser discípulos quiere decir también comer de verdad la carne de Jesús y beber de verdad su sangre. Y esto lo hacemos al compartir el pan y el vino de la Eucaristía. Para que seamos un Cuerpo, Espíritu y Vida con Cristo que es uno con el Padre.

Señor Jesús, haz que, al sentarnos a comer en tu mesa, miremos con atención lo que nos pones delante (Oficio de Lectura). Pues tendremos que preparar algo semejante. Es decir, así como no das a comer tu carne y a beber tu sangre, así también hemos de hacer lo mismo a favor de nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Concédenos también que, así como llevaste a cabo la obra de Dios, así también confiemos en la Providencia y llevemos a cabo lo que da a conocer Dios que pide de nosotros (SV.ES XI:398).
