Commit to the Poor of Flesh and Blood

Jesus goes about doing good; he loves in deed and truth. He does not just commit to an ideology. St. Vincent is like him.

St. Vincent wants those who follow him to commit with zeal to those who are poor (SV.FR XI:133-137). And it seems that he himself cannot but commit to them. For he tells those who follow him:

“As for me, notwithstanding my age, before God I do not feel excused from the obligation I have to work for the salvation of those poor folks; for what could prevent me from doing so? If I could not preach every day …, I would do it twice a week! If I could not go up great pulpits, I would try to have the small ones; if, again, if no one could understand me at those small ones, what would prevent me from speaking in a nice and familiar way to those good people in the way I am speaking to you right now, gathering them around me, as you are?”

Needless to say, the Founder is not like those who fool themselves. That is to say, those who just love their sweet talks with God. But they do not work for him, suffer, deny themselves, teach those who are poor or seek the stray.

Commit to the poor of flesh and blood

Yes, St. Vincent is one of those who announce the Good News by words and by works. That is to say, for him to commit to the poor does not only mean to preach. He also eases their sufferings, takes care of what they need in body and in spirit, and helps them in all the ways he can (see SV.EN XII:77-79). Besides, he makes sure that others help also, as he does, those who are poor. He shows, too, that he respects their self-worth as he makes use of “a white napkin.” He thus lifts up them up. To commit himself in all these ways is to commit to poor folks of flesh and blood. Not to an ideology. And ideologies put us at risk.

These “crude” folks, in turn, do not let the saint see in a romantic way how he serves (TWVDP 24, footnote 1). Nor do they hinder him from seeing the Son of God in them (SV.EN XI:26). In fact, they open the of eyes the one who cares for them and help him to grasp how wise the Sermon on the Mount is. And to know truly the crucified Jesus, the power and wisdom of God.

These poor folks of flesh and blood are also the letter of recommendation for St. Vincent. For they bear out that he shares in Jesus’ inventive love (SV.EN XI:131). And they proclaim beautiful upon the mountains the feet of the saint, since he brings good news.

Lord Jesus, make all those who follow St. Vincent not to fail to commit, as you and he, to poor folks of flesh and blood to the end.

Entregarse a loa pobres de carne y hueso

Jesús pasa haciendo el bien; nos enseña él que obras son amores y no buenas razones. No le basta con entregarse a una ideología. San Vicente es como él.

Quiere San Vicente que los que le siguen no dejen de entregarse con celo a las pobres gentes (SV.ES XI:55-58). Y él mismo, por lo visto, no puede más que entregarse a ellas. Pues les dice a los misioneros:

«En lo que a mí se refiere, a pesar de mi edad, delante de Dios no me siento excusado de la obligación que tengo de trabajar por la salvación de esas pobres gentes; porque, ¿qué me lo podrá impedir? Si no puedo predicar todos los días …, lo haré dos veces por semana; si no puedo subir a los grandes púlpitos, intentaré subir a los pequeños; y si no se me entiendese desde los pequeños, nada me impedirá hablar familiar y amigablemente con esas buenas gentes, lo mismo que lo hago ahora, haciendo que se pusieran alrededor de mí como estáis ahora vosotros.»

De más está decir, por lo tanto, que el Fundador no es de los que se engañan. Es decir, de los que se con¬tentan no más con los dulces coloquios que tienen con Dios. Pues no trabajan por Dios ni sufren ni se niegan a sí mismos ni instruyen a los pobres, ni buscan a los perdidos.

Entregarse a los pobres de carne y hueso

San Vicente, sí, es de los que anuncian de palabra y de obra la Buena Noticia a los pobres. Es decir, su modo de entregarse a los pobres no quiere decir predicar no más. Los cuida también, remedia sus necesidades espirituales y temporales de ellos, les asiste de todas las formas (véase SV.ES XI:393). Busca además que los demás asistan así a los pobres. Aun se muestra bien sensible a la dignidad de ellos por servirse él de «una servilleta blanca» (SV.ES X:619). Así los alienta él. Y entregarse de toda esa forma es entregarse a los pobres de carne y hueso, no a una ideologia. Y las ideologías nos ponen en riesgo.

Estos «groseros», a su vez, no dejan al santo ver de forma romántica su modo de servir (TWVDP 24, nota 1). Pero no le impiden tampoco ver en ellos al Hijo de Dios (SV.ES XI:723). De hecho, ellos le abren los ojos al que los asiste y le ayudan a captar lo sabio que es el Sermón del Monte. Y a conocer de verdad a Jesús crucificado, poder y sabiduría de Dios.

Estos pobres de carne y hueso son también la carta de recomendación para san Vicente (SV.ES IX:241). Pues dan fe de que él comparte el amor inventivo de Jesús (SV.ES XI:65). Y ellos proclaman hermosos sobre los montes los pies del santo, del que anuncia la Buena Nueva.

Señor Jesús, haz que todos los que siguen a san Vicente no dejen de entregarse, al igual que tú y él, a los pobres de carne y hueso hasta el fin.
