Happy and Glad Followers of Jesus

Jesus shows us by words and deeds what true happiness is. That is because he wants us to be happy and glad to the fullest.

Jesus proclaims happy the wretched in the eyes of the world. That is to say, he breaks the mold: he announces a counterculture; he fosters systemic change.

Such a change, of course, means we have to repent and believe in the Good News as we adapt to it. And since he does what he preaches, Jesus is himself the change that he wants to bring into our lives. Hence, it is enough for us to do as he does to be happy sharers in the new that now springs forth.

Happy are the true followers of Christ.

Jesus has so wanted to be poor that he has nowhere to rest his head (Lk 9, 58). And if he is that poor, no true Christian, then, would want to be rich (SV.EN X:166).

Jesus weeps, too. He weeps as he sees Mary weeps, sorrowful due to the death of her brother Lazarus (Jn 11, 35). He weeps besides over Jerusalem (Lk 19, 41). And he offers prayers with loud cries and tears to the Father (Heb 5, 7).

Thus, then, is the Teacher deeply moved and troubled. And so, what disciple, then, is one who sees a brother suffers and weeps not with him? Such one will indeed be a caricature of a Christian (SV.EN XII:222).

And Jesus calls to his rest those who labor and are burdened. He wants us to be happy as we take his yoke and learn from him. For he is meek and humble of heart; he is eternal sweetness (SV.EN IV:59). That is why we go to him and lead others to him.

Of course, Jesus is the one God anointed and sent to bring the Good News to the poor. And he carries out his mission boldly and with clean heart. He does not shrink in the face of persecution, insults and calumnies on the part of those who are against him. Not even in the face of death; tirelessly does he seek God’s kingdom and justice. He is meek, merciful and peaceful; he neither breaks a bruised reed nor quenches a smoldering wick (see Is 42, 2-4). But he does not falter or yield either until there is justice on earth.

And they will be happy, no doubt, those who live and die serving the needy so (SV.EN III:384). Their reward will be great in heaven.

Lord Jesus, we eat your body and drink your blood, which commits us to the poor (CCC 1397). Count us one day among the numberless happy people in your kingdom. And grant that we see the Father as he is.

Dichosos y alegres seguidores de Jesús

Jesús nos enseña de palabra y de obra lo que es la verdadera dicha. Es que quiere él que seamos dichosos y alegres de manera plena.

Proclama dichosos Jesús a los que el mundo toman por desgraciados. Es decir, él rompe esquemas: anuncia él una contracultura; promueve el cambio sistémico.

Tal cambio, claro, quiere decir convertirnos y creer en la Buena Nueva por amoldarnos a ella. Y como hace lo que dice, Jesús mismo es el cambio que busca introducir en nuestra vida. Nos basta, por lo tanto, hacer lo que él para que dichosos formemos parte de lo nuevo que se nos brota.

Dichosos son los verdaderos seguidores de Cristo.

Tan pobre se ha querido hacer Jesús, sí, que ni tiene donde reclinar la cabeza (Lc 9, 58). Y si así de pobre es él, entonces, es de suponer que ningún seguidor verdadero querrá ser rico (SV.ES X:813).

Jesús llora también. Llora al ver llorar a María, apenada por la muerte de su hermano Lázaro (Jn 11, 35). Además, llora él por Jerusalén (Lc 19, 41). Y presenta él, a gritos y con lágrimas, oraciones al Padre (Heb 5, 7).

Así pues, de esa forma se turba y se conmueve el Maestro. Entonces, será, de verdad, cristiano en pintura el discípulo que, al ver afligido a un hermano, no llore con él (SV.ES XI:561).

Y nos llama Jesús a los cansados y agobiados para que nos aliviemos. Y quiere que dichosos carguemos con su yugo y aprendamos de él, que es manso y humilde de corazón. Él es la suavidad eterna (SV.ES IV:55). Es por eso que se nos mueve a ir hacia él y a conducir también a los demás hacia él.

Por supuesto, Jesús es el Ungido y Enviado de Dios para anunciar la Buena Nueva a los pobres. Y lleva él a cabo su misión con denuedo y pureza de corazón. No se echa atrás ante las persecuciones, insultos, calumnias de parte de los que se oponen a él. Ni frente a la muerte; busca sin cejar el reino de Dios y su justicia. Es manso, misericordioso y pacífico; no quiebra él la caña cascada ni apaga la mecha vacilante (véase Is 42, 2-4). Pero no vacila ni se quiebra tampoco hasta implantar la justicia en la tierra.

Y serán dichosos, no cabe duda, cuantos así vivan y mueran en el servicio de los pobres (SV.ES III:359). Su recompensa será grande en el cielo.

Señor Jesús, comemos tu cuerpo y bebemos tu sangre, lo que entraña compromiso en favor de los pobres (CIC 1397). Cuéntanos un día entre los dichosos innumerables en tu reino. Y concédenos ver al Padre tal cual es.
