Blissful and Woeful Far Beyond Belief

Jesus became poor to make us rich by his poverty. He is the firstborn among many poor brothers and sisters who trust in God, and so, are blissful.

Jesus teaches that poor people are blessed, blissful. And those, too, who are hungry, and those who are weeping. Those, moreover, who become, on account of him, the target of hatred, exclusion, insult and denunciation.

And Jesus teaches not just with words. He also teaches by being true to them. That is to say, he practices what he teaches. And so, he casts his lot with the poor of the earth. He finds blissful being with them, and so he does not run away from them to chase wealth.

Yes, Jesus stays with the poor, those whose mistrust of selves is the basis for their trust in God (SV.EN III:143). For where they are, there the kingdom of God is. And he has his fill when they are hungry no longer. Also, laughter for him is seeing them laugh. Moreover, their joy in view of the great reward awaiting them in heaven—their hope is not just for this life—is reward enough for him.

All this may sound as beyond belief as the “pie in the sky by and by.” But it sounds that way if we look only at the blessings. It will become the opium that leaves the masses not at all blissful if the woes have no meaning. But the woes are Jesus’ way of saying, “Enough is enough” (Comentarios al Evangelio #5).

No, Jesus cannot bear such wide and shocking gap between the rich and the poor. He challenges us to give up and cry out against injustice and the evils that it brings. We are to root out hunger, malnutrition, inequality. And, surely, we cannot serve God and mammon. For God expects us to be loving and caring. Mammon, meanwhile, drives us to be greedy and exploitive of others.

Lord Jesus, make us blissful as we follow you in poverty, trusting in God and committed to serve the poor. Help us understand that we cannot receive worthily the Bread of Life without giving others the bread they need to live (Meditaciones cortitas, #251).

Bienaventurados y malaventurados increíbles

Jesús se hizo pobre para enriquecernos con su pobreza. Es el primogénito entre muchos hermanos y hermanas pobres que confían en Dios y, por eso, son bienaventurados.

Jesús los proclama bienaventurados a los pobres, a los que tienen hambre y los que lloran. También a los odiados, los excluidos, los insultados y los proscritos por causa de él.

Y no solo enseña Jesús con palabras. Enseña también siendo fiel a ellas. Es decir, practica lo que predica. Así pues, echa su suerte con los pobres de la tierra. Se siente bienaventurado entre estos bienaventurados. Por eso, no se huye de ellos a fin de buscar riquezas.

Se queda, sí, Jesús con los pobres, con los que hacen de la desconfianza en sí mismos el fundamento de la confianza en Dios (SV.ES III:124). Pues donde están ellos, allí está el reino de Dios. Se siente saciado cuando queda saciada el hambre de ellos. Toma por propia risa la risa de ellos. A él, además, le resulta bastante alegría verlos alegrarse en vista de la recompensa grande en el cielo, pues, sí, no solo en esta vida tienen puesta su esperanza.

Todo esto quizás nos resulte bien utópico. Pero lo será si nos fijamos solo en las bienaventuranzas. Se convertirá en opio del pueblo, que de ninguna manera nos dejará bienaventurados, si no nos damos cuenta de los ayes. Los ayes que pronuncia Jesús son su forma de decir: «¡Basta ya! (Comentarios al Evangelio núm. 5).

No, no soporta Jesús el abismo inmenso y escandaloso que separa a ricos y pobres. Nos reta él, entonces, a renunciar a toda injusticia y a las maldades que la acompañan y a denunciarlas todas. Hemos de arrancar de raíz el hambre, la desnutrición, la desigualdad. De verdad, no podemos servir a Dios y al cochino dinero. Espera Dios que seamos amorosos y solícitos. El dinero, en cambio, nos impulsa a la codicia y la explotación.

Señor Jesús, haz que seamos bienaventurados, siguiéndote a ti en la pobreza, confiados en Dios y comprometidos con los pobres. Concédenos entender que nosotros no podemos recibir dignamente el Pan de Vida sin compartir el pan para la vida con quienes lo necesitan (Meditaciones cortitas núm. 251).
