Perfect as Our Father in Heaven

Jesus, who is in the bosom of the Father and knows him up close, shows us the divine face. He wants us to be perfect as our Father.

It is quite clear what it means to be perfect as our Father in heaven: to go beyond what the law and the prophets command and forbid. Jesus, yes, sets the bar in life ever higher each time. And he cannot but do so, for he only knows the Father who loves the good and the bad. The Father who does not know what “enemy” means. And in turn, of course, the Son is the Father’s mercy made flesh.

But Jesus does not just say in general that we have to surpass the law and the prophets. For he shows us concrete ways to be perfect, to go beyond what the wise and learned deem just.

And there is no doubt that what Jesus asks us to do in concrete is clear and easy to grasp. Or we would not go to great lengths thinking of ways not to do it but still keep its spirit. Not rarely, though, and sadly, we end up watering down or distorting even what Jesus asks.

Maybe it is due to this that there is the charge that we Christians do not do what Jesus says. And that, worse, we also go against it (Comentarios al evangelio 11). But what is sure is not that we do not get it, but that we do not do it. We feel we cannot do what Jesus tells us.

And better that we wonder as the disciples on hearing Jesus tell them that the wealthy are at risk (Mt 19, 23-23). For he will right away spur us on as he says to us that yes, we can, by God’s grace.

Perfect only by God’s Grace

Just by God’s grace. Hence, we have to rely on God completely and give the credit to his grace for all success (SV.EN:305). And we who are weak, and can easily give in, should not tire of asking God for his grace (SV.EN IX:284). And we are to get strength, besides, from the food and drink from heaven. Or the journey will be too great for us; we will not reach our goal.

Lord Jesus, stay with us always. And make us seek, by the power of the Holy Spirit, what is good for our brothers and sisters. We shall thus get to be holy and perfect as our Father in heaven.

Perfectos como nuestro Padre en el cielo

Jesús, que está en el seno del Padre y le conoce de forma íntima, nos muestra el rostro divino. Y nos quiere él perfectos al igual que el Padre.

Se nos enseña bien claro qué quiere decir ser perfectos nosotros como nuestro Padre en el cielo es perfecto: ir más allá de lo que nos mandan y prohíben la ley y los profetas. Jesús, sí, pone el listón cada vez más alto en la vida. Y no puede sino hacerlo. Pues solo conoce al Padre que ama a los buenos y a los malos. Al Padre que desconoce el concepto de enemigo. Y, desde luego, el Hijo es, a su vez, la compasión del Padre hecha carne.

Pero no le basta a Jesús con generalizar que hay que ir más allá de lo mandado y prohibido. Pues nos enseña las formas concretas de lograr ser perfectos, exceder lo que los sabios y entendidos toman por justo.

Y no cabe duda de que se capta de modo claro y fácil eso que dice Jesús que se haga en concreto. Pues si no, no se pensaría en tantos modos de excusarnos de lo mandado y guardar aún su espíritu. Si bien se acaba, no pocas veces, con diluir o aun distorsionar lo que se nos manda.

Es por eso, quizás, que se nos acusa a los cristianos de que no cumplimos lo que dice Jesús. Y que, peor aún, lo subvertimos (Comentarios al evangelio 11). Pero lo cierto es que no nos cuesta comprender, sino hacer. Nos sentimos no capaces de cumplir lo que se nos pide.

Y mejor que nos preguntemos al igual que los discípulos al hablarles Jesús del riesgo que corren los ricos (Mt 19, 23-23). Pues él nos alentará al momento con decirnos que sí se puede, por la gracia de Dios.

Perfectos solo por la gracia de Dios

Solo por la gracia de Dios. Por lo tanto, hay que depender de Dios por completo y atribuir todo éxito a su gracia (SV.ES VII:250). Es por eso también que los que «somos débiles y capaces de sucumbir» no hemos de cejar en pedirle a Dios su gracia (SV.ES IX:332). Y nos hemos de fortalecer con la comida y la bebida del cielo. Pues si no, el camino se nos hará muy largo; no llegaremos a nuestro destino.

Señor Jesús, quédate siempre con nostros. Y haz que, por la fuerza del Espíritu Santo, busquemos siempre el bien de nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Así lograremos ser santos y perfectos como es santo y perfecto nuestro Padre en el cielo.
