Partners in the Project of the Kingdom of God

Jesus is the beloved Son of the Father who hands him over for us all. He announces to us the Good News of the kingdom. His true followers and partners listen to him.

Jesus ushers in the kingdom of God. He has every reason, then, to resist Satan, the power that opposes the kingdom of God and his righteousness. He does not like adversaries who would turn him away from his mission or would be obstacles to him. Rather, he wants partners.

And so, he invites the brothers Peter and Andrew and, later, James and his brother John. But as it turns out, having Peter, James and John as partners is almost like having them as adversaries (Mk. 8, 31-33; 10, 35-45).

Jesus, then, has his work cut out for him in forming partners. He continues to teach them. In his transfiguration, he gives Peter, James and John a glimpse of his being in the form of God. The theophany both frightens and draws them. So, Peter says, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

A reply comes from the cloud. It says, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Nothing at all about building tents. And to the disciples’ disappointment perhaps, suddenly they no longer see anyone but Jesus alone with them. The representatives of the law and the Prophets disappear. Jesus alone matters.

Jesus alone matters to those who would be his partners.

Seeing Jesus in his glory is undoubtedly important. But equally important is seeing him in the form of a slave. And what is of utmost importance, so that we may be his partners, is that we listen to him. Listen to him, yes, transfigured or disfigured.

The obvious questions, then, for us are: Do we listen to Jesus? Or are we adversaries who reject his word? As St. Vincent de Paul suggests, we have to say only what God inspires us to say through his beloved Son (SV.EN XI:312. 314). We must also listen to Jesus when, upon our request, he tells us what he would do were he in our place.

And, of course, the followers of St. Vincent are to “turn the medal” (SV.EN XI:26). We should see and hear Jesus in his human likeness, in the poor people with whom he identifies.

Lord Jesus, give us a perfect heart to receive your word and sacrament. Make us bear much fruit as your partners.

Colaboradores en el proyecto del Reino de Dios

Jesús es el Hijo amado de Dios quien lo entrega a la muerte por nosotros. Proclama él la Buena Noticia del reino. Lo escuchan sus verdaderos seguidores y colaboradores.

Inaugura Jesús el reino de Dios. Con toda razón, pues, se resiste a Satanás, la fuerza adversa al reino de Dios y su justicia. De ninguna manera le gustan adversarios que quieran desviarlo de su misión y su o hacerlo tropezar. Busca, más bien, colaboradores.

Y, por eso, llama a los hermanos Pedro y Andrés, y, luego, a Santiago y a su hermano Juan. Pero resulta que tener a Pedro, Santiago y Juan por colaboradores es casi como tenerlos por adversarios (Mc 8, 31-33; 10, 35-45). Los tres dejan mucho que desear aún.

Así que Jesús tiene mucho trabajo por delante como formador de colaboradores. Por eso, continúa formándolos. Por su transfiguración, les da a Pedro, Santiago y Juan un vislumbre de su condición divina. La teofanía los asusta y atrae a la vez. Por eso, dice Pedro: «Maestro. ¡Qué bien se está aquí! Vamos a hacer tres chozas, una para ti, otra para Moisés y otra para Elías».

Sale una respuesta de la nube: «Éste es mi Hijo amado; escuchadlo». Nada se menciona de las chozas. Y decepcionados quizás, ya no ven los discípulos a nadie más que a Jesús, solo con ellos. Se desaparecen los represantes de la ley y de los profetas. Solo Jesús importa.

Solo Jesús les importa a los colaboradores potenciales.

Indudablemente, es importante ver a Jesús en su gloria. Pero es importante también verlo en su condición de esclavo. Pero lo sumamente importante, para que seamos colaboradores suyos, es que escuchemos a Jesús, transfigurado o desfigurado.

Son éstas, pues, las preguntas obvias que hay que hacer: ¿Escuchamos nosotros a Jesús? ¿Colaboradores somos o adversarios? Como lo da a entender san Vicente de Paúl, tenemos que anunciar nada más que lo que Dios nos inspira mediante su Hijo amado (SV.ES XI:237, 240). También hemos de escuchar a Jesús al enseñarnos él, a petición nuestra, qué haría si estuviera en nuestro lugar.

Y, claro, se espera de los seguidores de san Vicente que «le demos vuelta a la medalla» (SV.XI:725). Debemos ver y escuhar a Jesús en su condición humana, en los pobres que lo representan.

Señor Jesús, concédenos un corazón noble que reciba tu palabra y tu sacramento. Haz que demos fruto abundante como colaboradores tuyos.
