Point and Witness to God’s Son and Lamb

Jesus is the Son of God and also the Lamb of God. We Christians believe and proclaim him so. We also point and witness to him.

John’s reason for being is to point and witness to Jesus. For he baptizes with water so that he may reveal the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit. And he is sure to point Jesus out as the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He further witnesses that Jesus has the Holy Spirit and is the Son of God.

We Christians are also to point and witness to Jesus as the Son of God and the Lamb of God. To do so, however, we have first to believe and know him.

And we begin as John, humbly admitting that we do not know Jesus. Humble like little children, we hope for the knowledge that comes from the Father.

For the Lord of heaven and earth reveals to the childlike what he hides from the wise (Mt 11, 25-27). So, we trust that he will count us among the poor who keep the true religion (SV.EN XI:190). They have a living faith, believing simply without taking everything apart.

Yes, poor people stand a better chance than the learned of grasping that Jesus is the Lamb of God. The Lamb whose flesh is food and whose blood saves (Ex 12, 11-13), the Lamb for sacrifice (1 Cor 5, 7; Rev 5, 11). For because of their poverty, they more easily identify and relate with the Suffering Servant. This Servant bears our sins and brings us healing by his wounds (1 Pt 2, 24); he is like a lamb for the slaughter (Is 53,7). And so, Son of God though he is, Jesus learns obedience through suffering (Heb 5, 8).

Is it this Son and Servant we believe in and know? We surely do not want to point and witness to the wrong Jesus.

Lamb of God, you bless us and make us holy by calling us to your Supper. As we eat your body and drink your blood, make us follow you even to the point of offering ourselves as lambs of sacrifice. And may your Holy Spirit drive us to go about doing good.

Señalar al Hijo y Cordero de Dios y ser su testigo

Jesús es el Hijo de Dios y también el Cordero de Dios. Así le reconocemos con fe y le proclamamos los cristianos. A él también debemos señalar y de él dar testimonio.

La razón de ser de Juan es señalar a Jesús y dar testimonio de él. Pues bautiza con agua para que sea manifestado el que bautiza con Espíritu Santo. Y no deja de señalar el Bautista que Jesús es el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo. Da testimonio además de que Jesús posee el Espíritu Santo y es el Hijo de Dios.

También nos toca a los cristianos señalar a Jesús y dar testimonio de que él es el Hijo de Dios y el Cordero de Dios. Pero se nos requiere primero que creamos en él y le conozcamos.

Y comenzamos como Juan, es decir, con admitir con humildad que no conocemos a Jesús. Siendo humildes como los niños pequeños, esperamos el conocimiento que viene del Padre.

Pues el Señor de cielo y tierra revela a los pequeños lo que esconde a los sabios (Mt 11, 25-27). Así que tenemos confianza de que él nos contará entre los pobres que guardan la verdadera religión, la fe viva (SV.ES XI:120). Creen ellos sencillamente, sin hurgar.

Los pobres, sí, tienen mayores posibilidades que los sabios de comprender que Jesús es el Cordero de Dios. El Cordero cuyo carne es alimento y cuya sangre salva (Éx 12, 11-13), el Cordero del sacrificio (1 Cor 5, 7; Apoc 5, 11). Es que debido a su pobreza, más fácilmente se identifican y se relacionan con el Siervo Sufriente. Este Siervo carga con nuestros pecados y nos sana por sus heridas (1 Pd 2, 24); es como cordero llevado al matadero (Is 53, 7). Así pues, aun siendo Hijo de Dios, Jesús aprende, sufriendo, a obedecer (Heb 5, 8).

¿Es éste el Hijo y Siervo en quien creemos y al cual conocemos? Por supuesto, no queremos señalar al que no es Jesús ni dar testimonio de alguien que no es él.

Cordero de Dios, invitándonos a tu Cena, nos bendices y nos santificas. Haz que los que comemos tu cuerpo y bebemos tu sangre te sigamos aun hasta el punto de ofrecernos a nosotros mismos como corderos sacrificiales. Así lograremos señalar que eres nuestro Cordero Pascual. Y concédenos tu Espíritu Santo que nos impulse a pasar haciendo el bien.
