Breath that Creates, Gives Life and Renews

Jesus, the Good Shepherd, has come so that his followers, his sheep, may have life and have it to the full. He passes on to them his breath.

In the Acts of the Apostles, fifty days separate Pentecost from Easter. But that is not so in John’s Gospel that we hear or read today. Here, Jesus blows his breath on his disciples and gives them the Holy Spirit. And this takes place on the evening of the same Sunday of his rising from the dead. So, in John’s account, Easter Sunday is also Pentecost Sunday.

And Jesus’ breath brings to mind that God breathed life into Adam that he had shaped from clay. There is the hint, then, that Jesus’ breath creates, gives life and renews. In Paul’s words, those in Christ are a new creation; the old passes away, and the new is here.

Among other things, new creation means that God speaks my language and all languages. He is God not just of the Jews or of the Samaritans. Worship of him in Spirit and truth knows no borders. He is God of all humans and for all humans. He is our Father, the Father of all.

And taking seriously that we have but one Father, that we are all brothers and sisters, and are one, makes for peace, reconciliation. It also makes us reach out to others, asking the most important question among so many questions.

But we know we remain clay. And so, we rely on the Holy Spirit, on Jesus’ breath, so that we may not be crushed or despair. Due to his many gifts, among which is zeal, nothing, neither fear nor old age, for instance, can hinder us (SV.EN XI:123). These gifts also spur us on to strive to be spiritual men and women who serve God and the poor (SV.EN XII:82).

Lord Jesus, do not just show us your hands and your side, but give us also the marks they bear. We can thus carry your death in our bodies and show your life in our bodies also. It will, then, be clear, as we stay one with you while you give your body up and you shed your blood, that we share your breath, that the Holy Spirit is in us.

Pentecost Sunday (A)

Aliento que crea, da vida y renueva

Jesús, el Buen Pastor, ha venido para que sus seguidores, sus ovejas, tengan vida y la tengan abundante. Él les comunica su aliento.

En los Hechos de los Apóstoles, cincuenta días separan el Pentecostés de la Pascua. No es así en el Evangelio de Juan que se proclama hoy. En éste, sopla Jesús su aliento sobre los discípulos y les da el Espíritu Santo. Y esto ocurre al anocher del mismo día de la resurrección. En el relato de Juan, por lo tanto, el Domingo de Pascua es también el Domingo de Pentecostés.

Y el soplo de Jesús recuerda que Dios sopló su aliento sobre Adán al cual modeló con barro. Se nos da a entender entonces que el aliento de Jesús crea, vivifica y renueva. Al decir de Pablo, los que están en Cristo son una nueva creación; lo viejo pasa, y lo nuevo está aquí.

Entre otras cosas, quiere decir la nueva creación que Dios habla mi lengua y todas las lenguas. No solo es Dios de los judíos o de los samaritanos. El culto de él en Espíritu y verdad no conoce fronteras. Dios es de todos y para todos. Él es nuestro Padre.

Y tomar en serio que tenemos un solo Padre, que todos somos hermanos y hermanas, que formamos un cuerpo: —esto lleva a la paz, la reconciliación. Y a que nos acerquemos a los demás y a que hagamos la pregunta vicentina, la más importante de todas.

Mas admitimos que no dejamos de ser barro. Por lo tanto, nos fiamos del Espíritu Santo, del aliento de Jesús, para que no nos abatamos ni nos desesperemos. Debido a sus muchos dones, y celo es uno de ellos, nada, ni el miedo ni la vez, puede impedirnos (SV.ES XI:57). Estos dones nos impulsan también, como siervos de Dios y de los pobres, a esforzarnos en tener vida espiritual, en concebir grandes y santos ideales (SV.ES XI:398).

Señor Jesús, no te contentes con solo enseñarnos las manos y el costado. Deja grabadas también en nosotros las marcas de los clavos y de la lanza. Podremos así llevar en nuestro cuerpo tu muerte y manifestar tu vida en nuestro cuerpo también. Quedará claro entonces, al unirnos a ti en entregar tu cuerpo y derramar tu sangre, que compartimos tu aliento, que el Espíritu Santo está en nosotros.
