- Flame of Blazing and Renewing Fire
Jesus is Lord! But we can say this only by the Holy Spirit. And only his flame can renew the face of the earth.
The Holy Spirit comes with the strength of a driving wind that fills the whole house where the disciples are. And a tongue of fire or flame rests on each of them.
The happening sends us back to Gen 1, 2, Ex 3, 2 and 9, 16-19, among other passages. And the stunning features in these passages are, in the minds of the Israelites, normal when the Lord shows up.
But the way he appears to Elijah breaks with the normal (1 Kgs 19, 11-13). For the Lord is not in the wind, earthquake or fire. Rather, he is in a “tiny whispering sound.”
No, we do not wholly know how God, who is beyond what we can understand, describe and hope for, will show up. But what he shows us as true is that he is Lord of nature (Ps 29). And, at once, of history, since for our sake, this God of peace puts order to chaos.
How the Spirit shows up, whether in a flame or in a small still voice, matters little.
What matters is that he comes. Only his flame can set on fire the very depths of our hearts so that they burn with love. Cosmetic changes are not enough (Ps 51, 12; Eph 4, 23; Mt 12, 34), if we do not want to stay lukewarm. If we do not love as Jesus, we will slow down rather than speed up the full coming to be of the new that the Lord is making.
And the Spirit helps us, who are weak, to know peace and forgiveness in our lives. To say, too, “Jesus is Lord!” and pray. He makes his own our prayers so that they ask as God wills.
The Spirit also enables us to love to the utmost. So that we may even go along, as Jesus, with those who pay back our love with loathsome betrayal. After our washing their feet and giving them morsels from our dish, after their kisses.
Our Light from heaven also leads us to all truth. And he strengthens us so that we may live up to it even though it may be hard to bear. He will bring to mind all that Jesus has told us. He will even etch in our memories the marks of the nails and the spear in the one who gave his body up and shed his blood for us.
And the Spirit is the Gift of gifts, many and different. It matters little what is ours, whether stunning or not (LG 12). What is crucial is to work for communion and build up the Church. And it is better to strive for love, the best gift (1 Cor 12, 31 – 13, 13).
Lord Jesus, give us zeal, the flame of your love (SV.EN XII:251). And send us to spread peace and to serve the poor quietly and humbly (SLM.EN:660).

Pentecost Sunday (A)

- Llama del fuego ardiente y renovador
¡Jesús es Señor! Pero esto lo podemos decir solo por el Espíritu Santo. Y solo su llama puede renovar la faz de la tierra.
Viene el Espíritu Santo con la fuerza de un viento recio que llena toda la casa donde están los discípulos. Y se posa encima de cada uno una lengua de fuego o llama.
Lo que sucede nos remite a Gén 1, 2 , Éx 3, 2 y 19, 16-19, entre otras citas. Los rasgos asombrosos en estas citas son, en la mente de los israelitas, lo normal en cuanto a las teofanías.
Pero la manifestación a Elías rompe con lo normal (1 Rey 19, 11-13). Pues el Señor no está ni en el viento ni en el terremoto ni en el fuego, sino en «un susurro de una brisa suave».
No, no sabemos del todo cómo se nos revelará el Señor que trasciende nuestra capacidad de comprender, describir y esperar. Pero se nos indica como cierto que él es Señor de la naturaleza (Sal 29). Y, a la vez, de la historia, que para nuestro bien, pone orden al caos el Dios de paz.
Poco importa la manera en la que se nos manifieste el Espíritu, o en una llama o en un murmullo.
Lo importante es que él venga. Solo su llama puede prender fuego en lo más íntimo de nuestros corazones para que ardan de amor. No nos basta con cambios cosméticos (Sal 51, 12; Ef 4, 23; Mt 12, 34), si queremos dejar de ser tibios. Y si no amamos como Jesús de forma desinteresada, detendremos más que aceleraremos la realización de lo nuevo que hace el Señor.
Y el Padre de los pobres, sí, nos ayuda a los pobres y débiles, para que gocemos de paz y perdón. Para que digamos: «¡Jesús es Señor!», y oremos. Hace suyas nuestras oraciones para que pidan lo que quiere Dios.
También nos capacita para amar hasta lo sumo. Incluso para consentir, como Jesús, a los que nos pagan el amor con traición vil, luego de lavarles los pies nosotros. Después de recibir ellos de nosotros trozos de pan, y de besarnos.
Nos guía también la Luz hasta la plena verdad. Y nos confirma para que la vivamos aunque muy difícil de soportar. Nos trae a la memoria todas palabras y obras de Jesús. Incluso nos graba en la mente las marcas de los clavos y de la lanza en el que entregó su cuerpo y derramó su sangre.
Y el Espíritu es el Don de dones, muchos y diversos. Poco importa cuál sea el nuestro, asombroso o no (LG 12). Lo decisivo es el contribuir a la comunión y la edificación del cuerpo de Cristo. Y mejor ambicionar el amor que es la manifestación más excelente (1 Cor 12, 31 – 13, 13).
Señor Jesús, concédenos el celo que es la llama de tu amor (SV.ES XI:590). Y envíanos a contagiar paz y perdón, y a servir a los pobres en silencio y con humildad (SLM.ES:636).
