Power for the mission to announce the Gospel

The Holy Spirit is the power that equips us for the mission to announce the Gospel.

Salvation belongs to those who confess by the power of the Spirit, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe that God raised him from the dead. Confession with our mouth and faith in our heart are crucial to our justification.

But no one can confess and believe in such away if not by the power of the Holy Spirit. And so, it becomes clear, moreover, that he is crucial, if we are to proclaim the Gospel in a saving way. We can become, for that matter, Jesus’ witnesses by the power of the Holy Spirit.

To bring Good News, of course, means we have to be people of the Good News. We need to follow Jesus closely and keep his teachings. And we can do so by the power of the Spirit who leads us to all truth. He will remind us of Jesus, his teachings and the Scripture. He thus will equip us for every good work.

Jesus states in another way that we cannot do without the Spirit. Entrusting the disciple with the mission of peace and forgiveness, he breathes on them. He then tells them, “Receive the Holy Spirit ….” It is the power of the Holy Spirit that takes the fearful out of the house of fear.

Jesus wants us who claim to be Christians to look out not for our own interests, our well-being, our security. Nor does he want us to settle for our inner circle. That is why he gives us the power of the Spirit to bring the Gospel to the outskirts.

And the bringing of the Gospel to those who live in the outskirts has to be by words and works (SV.EN XII:78-79). That means we have to help them in every way and have others help them likewise.

By the power of the Holy Spirit, we can mirror, too, by bringing the Gospel to the poor, the special presence of Jesus among us.

After his resurrection, Jesus keeps coming and going just like that, even going through locked doors. This shows that his presence is beyond the physical. We will mirror, yes, this special presence if our search for the heavenly enlivens our concern to better the earthly (GS 39). Even now, then, there is some foreshadowing of the new age.

Truly, Jesus expects us not to be of this world even while we are in the world. We live here now, but really it is Christ who should be living us. And so that we may now behold the Paschal mystery by the power of the Spirit, he gives us the Eucharist. This remembrance “commits us to the poor” (CCC 397).

Grant us, Lord, the power of your Holy Spirit, so that we get to go about doing good.

Fuerza para la misión de evangelización

El Espíritu Santo es la fuerza que nos capacita para la misíon de evangelización.

Se salvan cuantos confiesan por la fuerza del Espíritu: «Jesús es Señor», y creen que Dios lo resucitó de entre los muertos. La confesión con la boca y la fe en el corazón son decisivas, pues, para nuestra justificación.

Pero nadie puede hacer tal confesión y tener tal fe si no es bajo la fuerza del Espíritu Santo. Así que queda claro además que es decisivo el Espíritu Santo para la proclamación salvadora del Evangelio. De hecho, somos capaces de ser testigos de Jesús por la fuerza del Espíritu.

Claro, evangelizar require que seamos hombres de Evangelio, siguiendo a Jesús de cerca y guardando sus enseñanzas. Y podemos serlo por la fuerza del Espíritu Santo que nos guíe a toda verdad. Él nos recordará además a Jesús, sus eneseñanzas y la Escritura. Así quedaremos capacitados para toda obra buena.

Y afirma Jesús de otra forma esa imprescindiblidad del Espíritu Santo. Pues confiando la misión de paz y perdón a los discípulos, él exhala su aliento sobre ellos. A continuación les dice: «Recibid el Espíritu Santo …». Es la fuerza del Espíritu la que saca a los temerosos de la casa del temor.

Por tanto, no quiere Jesús que los que pretendemos ser cristianos nos encerremos en nuestros intereses, nuestro bienestar, nuestras seguridades. Tampoco nos quiere contentos con el círculo cerrado de allegados y conocidos. Por eso, nos da la fuerza del Espíritu para proclamar el Evangelio de reconciliación en las periferias.

Y la evangelización de los que viven en las periferias han de ser de palabra y de obra (SV:ES XI:393). Es decir, hay que asistir a los pobres de todas la maneras, y procurar que los demás les asistan asimismo.

Por la fuerza del Espíritu también podemos reflejar, evangelizando a los pobres, la presencia especial de Jesús entre nosotros.

Después de la resurrección, Jesús va apareciéndose sin más a los discípulos, aun penetrando en las puertas cerradas. Y sin más también va desapareciendo. Esto indica claramente que su presencia está más allá de lo físico.

Reflejaremos, sí, esa presencia especial si la búsqueda de lo celestial aviva nuestra preocupación de perfeccionar lo terrenal (GS 39). Así pues, aun ahora se anticipa de alguna manera un vislumbre del siglo nuevo.

Verdaderamente pues, se espera de nosotros que, aun estando en el mundo, no seamos del mundo. Vivimos aquí ahora, pero realmente, es Cristo quien debe vivir en nosotros.

Y para que contemplemos ahora su misterio pascual por la fuerza el Espíritu, nos ha dado la Eucaristía. Esa memoria viva del misterio «entraña un compromiso en favor de los pobres» (CIC 1397).

Concédenos, Señor, la fuerza del Espíritu Santo, para que logremos pasar haciendo el bien.
