Alert to the Dangers the World Poses

Jesus is the cry that seek to alert us of the risks that we run. For we live in a world that fosters individualism and hoarding.

Not a few of Jesus’ teachings, the paradoxes in particular, raise eyebrows and puzzle. Through them, he holds those who hear him captive. And he makes them think. For he wants to alert them of the dangers that many do not know lurk.

And one of these teachings has to do with his stance on riches. It makes those who are fond of money to snicker. For Jesus does not think as many do (“paradox” means “against the common belief”). He is not with those who take wealth as a blessing for those who are good. For him, in fact, wealth poses dangers that folks that should be alert to.

The greatest danger is that wealth can lead the wealthy to think they do it all on their own. That they owe it all to no one. This, indeed, is the danger that Jesus wants to alert us to by way of the parable of the rich fool. To think that we are self-made is to not know ourselves. And is not to know ourselves the beginning of being wise and human?

No, it is not wise nor human to lose sight of the one in whom we live, move and have our being. It is not wise nor human to deny that no one is an island. And, of course, what do we have that we did not receive?

More dangers that all should be alert to

The Maker who has the power of life and death over us wants to give us the kingdom. But do we not, in effect, turn it down when we do not admit that we depend on him most of all? It is right, then, that he is happy to give his kingdom to the little ones. And he makes them his little flock.

The least, in turn, stay poor and open to God and to others. What makes them tick, what they treasure, is the kingdom; to have it is to have other things besides. For its sake, they gird their loins. That is to say, no baggy clothes, no broad phylacteries or long fringes hinder them from carrying out promptly their task. And their lamps are lit; they watch, are awake and know what goes on. Besides, they behave as the kingdom asks them; their yield matches what they are given in trust.

For indeed, we are at risk of getting lost on the way to Jerusalem if we do not live as the kingdom asks us to do. If we are dazed in the moral, spiritual or legal sense. If we stay shut, safe and sound, like snails in their shells (SV.EN XII:81). Of course, we are at risk, too, if we worry about our basic needs. About our gains, careers and places of power also. We better be careful, too: by being nosy about others’ work for the kingdom, we may end up not doing our share of the work.

Lord Jesus, do not stop to alert us of the dangers that lurk in this world. And make our faith strong. Let it lead us to know the true oaths given us and not doubt that what we hope for will come true. Grant that we see in your Supper the pledge of the glory to come.

Alertar a todos de los peligros en el mundo

Jesús es el grito que nos trata de alertar de los riesgos que corremos. Pues vivimos en un mundo individualista y acaparador.

No pocas enseñanzas de Jesús, las paradójicas en particular, causan asombro y desconcierto. Por ellas, cautiva él a los que le oyen. Y los hace pensar también. Pues él los quiere alertar de los peligros, de los cuales no se dan cuenta muchos.

Y una de esas enseñanzas tiene que ver con su postura frente a las riquezas. Ella causa risa de burla en los que aman al dinero. Pues Jesús no es del parecer de muchos («paradojo» significa «lo contrario a la opinión común»). Discrepa él con los que toman las riquezas por bendición o premio que se les da a los buenos. Para él, de hecho, las riquezas representan peligros de que se ha de alertar la gente.

El peligro más grande es que las riquezas los pueden llevar a los ricos a creerse hijos de sus propias obras. A pensar que no debe nada a nadie, que todo se debe a sí mismos. Es el peligro del cual nos quiere alertar Jesús por medio de la parábola del rico poco sensato. Creernos productos de nosotros mismos es no conocernos a nosotros mismos. Y, ¿no es el conocernos a nosotros mismos el comienzo de ser sabio y de ser humano?

No, no es sabio ni humano perder de vista al que en quien vivimos, nos movemos y existimos. Ni sabios ni humanos seremos si negamos que nadie es una isla. Y sí, ¿qué tenemos que no hayamos recibido?

Más peligros de los que se les ha de alertar a todos

El Hacedor que dispone de la vida y de la muerte de todos nos quiere dar el reino. Pero ¿no lo rechazamos, en efecto, al no reconocer que dependemos de él más que de nadie? Con razón, tiene él a bien dar el reino a los pequeños, a los que reúne y de los cuales hace él un pequeño rebaño.

Y ellos, a su vez, se mantienen pobres y abiertos a Dios y a los demás. Su fuerza motriz, su tesoro, es el reino, pues si lo tienen, tendrán todo lo demás. Por causa de él, tienen la cintura ceñida. Es decir, ni las ropas holgadas ni las filacterias anchas y flecos largos les impiden entregarse pronto a su tarea. Y tienen ellos las lámparas encendidas; velan, están despiertos, se dan cuenta de todo. Ademas, se portan de acuerdo con las exigencias del reino; dan en proporción a lo que se les ha dado y confiado.

Pues, sí, corremos el riesgo de desviarnos del camino a Jerusalén los que no vivimos conforme a las exigencias del reino. Y los que nos quedamos atololondrados, en el sentido moral, espiritual o jurídico. Los encerrados salvos y sanos, cual caracoles en su concha (SV.ES XI:397). Por supuesto, también los que nos agobiamos por nuestras necesidades básicas, y por nuestras ganancias, carreras y sedes de poder. Y cuidado, que por entrometer en el trabajo de los demás por el reino, terminamos con no hacer nuestra parte.

Señor Jesús, no nos ceses de alertar de los peligros que hay en este mundo y de hacer más firme nuestra fe. Haz que la fe nos lleve a conocer con certeza la promesa que se nos ha dado, y a no dudar de lo que esperamos. Concédenos ver en tu Cena la prenda de la gloria futura.
