Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A-2017

Astounding very much indeed!

Jesus, the astounding Son of Man, will astound us even at the last judgment. He wants us to put him in the center.

Among other things, the way Jesus teaches is astounding. He teaches with authority. This means, says St. Gregory the Great, that his authority does not come from domineering power but from good behavior. In contrast to those who proudly seat on the chair of Moses, Jesus practices what he preaches.

But Jesus is even more astounding because we find what he practices and teaches to be out of the ordinary. He asserts on one occasion, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” He adds, besides, “It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle.”

Such teaching, then, and others that sound paradoxical to worldly ears are all part of what makes Jesus astounding. They turn the world upside down. In that way, they warn those who are strong and they lift up those who are weak.

Jesus is astounding in his miracles, walking, for example, or making us walk, on the water in a storm.

Jesus astounds us with his miracles. They are the wonders of his love. Through them becomes effective and real the proclamation of the Good News to us poor people.

But wondrous deeds serve to tell us to fix our gaze on the one who reassures us in an astounding way, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” That is because we shall surely sink when we take our eyes off Jesus and keep them instead on ourselves and our safety.

But just the same, our Savior stretches out his hand and catches us. He makes us keep our eyes fixed on him again and forget ourselves, for in him lies our salvation. He is the calming and uplifting presence of the tiny whispering sound.

What is astounding, then, does not have to do with the turmoil the violent bring about. What is astounding is synonymous rather with the peace that belongs to the meek and humble of heart. And to those, too, who could wish they themselves were accursed for the sake of their own people.

And, in the end those who do not let any poor person go hungry will receive the attestation of blessedness. They see the body of Christ in the one who startles many nations and leaves kings speechless. In other words, they have turned the medal (SV.EN XI:26). So, they will hear: “Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the Kingdom.”

Lord Jesus, do not let us keep our eyes fixed on ourselves, so that we may not sink. May we never lose sight of you who are exceedingly astounding.

Asombroso sobremanera de verdad

Jesús, el asombroso Hijo del Hombre, nos dejará asombrados incluso en el juicio final. Nos quiere concentrados en él.

Nos queda descubierto por asombroso, entre otras cosas, el modo de enseñar nuevo de Jesús. Enseña él con autoridad, no basada en el poder, segúnsan Gregorio Magno, sino en la conducta. A diferencia de los ensoberbecidos ocupantes de la cátedra mosaica, Jesús hace lo que dice.

Asombra aún más Jesús porque lo que él hace y dice nos resulta desacostumbrado. Afirma él en una ocasión: «¡Qué difícil les va a ser a los ricos entrar en el reino de Dios!». Añade además: «Más fácil le es a un camello pasar por el ojo de una aguja».

Forman parte, pues, de lo asombroso relacionado a Jesús tal enseñanza y otras que les suenan paradójicas a oídos mundanos. Al mundo lo ponen ellas boca abajo. Así se les advierte a los fuertes a la vez que se les alienta a los débiles.

Asombroso queda manifestado Jesús en sus milagros, andando él, por ejemplo, o haciéndonos andar, sobre el agua en plena tempestad.

Con sus milagros, desde luego, nos deja asombrados Jesús. Son prodigios de misericordia. Mediante ellos, se hace eficazmente concreta la proclamación de la Buena Nueva a nosotros los pobres.

Pero sirven también los milagros para que nos concentremos en el que asombroso nos asegura: «¡Ánimo, soy yo, no tengáis miedo!». Es que, perdiéndole de vista a Jesús, nos hundimos ciertamente al fijarnos en nosotros mismos y en nuestra seguridad.

Pero igual nos extiende la mano el Salvador, y nos agarra. Hace que nos fijemos en él de nuevo y nos olvidemos de nosotros mismos, que en él está nuestra salvación. Él es la presencia tranquilizante y alentadora del susurro de una brisa suave.

No se conecta, pues, lo asombroso con la turbulencia que causan los violentos. Lo asombroso es sinónimo, más bien, de la paz, propia de los mansos y humildes de corazón. Y, sí, también de los que desearían ser proscritos ellos mismos por el bien de sus hermanos.

Y, al final, se confirmarán dichosos de modo asombroso cuantos no dejan que pase hambre ningún pobre. Disciernen el cuerpo de Cristo en el que asombra a muchas naciones y ante quien cierran la boca los reyes. En otras palabras, le han dado vuelta a la medalla (SV.ES XI:725). Por eso, oirán: «Venid vosotros, benditos de mi Padre; heredad el reino preparado para vosotros».

Señor Jesús, no nos dejes ensimismarnos, para que no nos hundamos. Haz que jamás perdamos de vista a ti, asombroso sobremanera.
