Faces of God, of Jesus, of Those in Need

Jesus embodies the blessing that God pours out on us through the Holy Spirit. His face shines on us, so that our faces may mirror his.

The faces of Mary and Joseph gleam since on them shines the face of Jesus. He is the great eternal high priest (Heb 2, 17; 4, 14; 7, 24). Hence, his blessing is what counts.

Yes, Joseph, Jesus’ foster father, and Mary, his biological mother, are highly blessed. And Jesus is the Word who is God (Jn 1, 1). So then, the title God-bearer, Mother of God, fits her.

But this blessing is not due so much that they are such parents as that they hear and do God’s word (Lk 8, 21). That is to say, the gleam on the faces of Joseph and Mary mirrors and proclaims the greatness of God. For he looks kindly on his lowly servants who shake at his word. Hence, he does great things for them.

So then, Mary, Mother of God, like Joseph, points to Jesus. That is why she sends the servers to Jesus, for he says to them, “Do, whatever he tells you.” Her title, too, as Mother of God is less about her motherhood and more about Jesus as God and man.

Are we like her then? Or do we point to ourselves? Are we like her then? Or do we point to ourselves? For like fools, we could say in our hearts, “I am the one who has done this good work” (SV.EN VII:116).

Are we simple and lowly as Mary and Joseph, which leads us, too, to meekness, zeal and sacrifice of self. Do we, as the shepherds, also point to God, the one to praise? For it is he who does what we see and hear that makes our faces gleam is his doing. And do we send others to the one a woman gave birth to? For through him God ransoms us and adopts us as his sons and daughters.

Lord Jesus, may our faces mirror your face. We will thus truly bear your name. And make us grasp that our faces will beam out your splendor if we give up ourselves to the end. At the foot of the cross. Just like your Mother who becomes the Mother of the lowly and crucified poor. The Mother of the poor Church for the poor. She puts her trust in Providence; she will have the peace and joy that no one can away from her.

Rostros de Dios, de Jesús, de los pobres

Jesús es la bendición en persona que Dios derrama sobre nosotros por el Espíritu Santo. Su rostro nos ilumina, para que nuestros rostros reflejen el suyo.

Brillan los rostros de María y José. Es que los ilumina el rostro de Jesús. Él es el sumo sacerdote, grande y eterno (Heb 2, 17; 4, 14; 7, 24). Por lo tanto, es su bendición que más cuenta.

Sí, son sumamente benditos José, el padre adoptivo de Jesús, y María, la madre biológica. Y Jesús es el Verbo que es Dios (Jn 1, 1). Así pues, a María le conviene el apelativo de deípara, «la que dio a luz a Dios», Madre de Dios.

Pero esa bendición no está tanto en ser tales padres cuanto en oír y hacer la palabra de Dios (Lc 8, 21). Por lo tanto, el brillo en los rostros de José y María refleja y proclama la grandeza de Dios. Es que éste pone sus ojos en sus humildes siervos que se estremecen ante su palabra. Y hace él obras grandes por ellos.

Así que María, Madre de Dios, al igual que José, señala a Jesús. A éste dirige ella a los sirvientes, pues les dice: «Haced lo que él diga». Incluso su apelativo de Madre de Dios no afirma tanto su maternidad cuanto la divinidad y humanidad de Jesús.

En esto, ¿somos nosotros como ella? O, ¿nos gusta llamar la atención sobre nosotros mismos? Es posible que necios nos digamos: «Soy yo el que ha hecho esa buena obra» (SVES.VII:91). . ¿Tenemos la sencillez y la humildad de María y José, las que nos lleven a ser mansos, celosos y mortificados? Al igual que los pastores, ¿señalamos a Dios, digno de alabanza por lo que vemos y oímos que ilumina nuestros rostros? ¿Dirigimos a los demás al nacido de una mujer para que les den gracias? Pues por él nos rescata Dios para que seamos sus hijos por adepción.

Señor Jesús, que nuestros rostros reflejen tu rostro. Así seremos dignos de llevar tu nombre. Y haz que captemos que nuestros rostros radiarán tu gloria si nos entregamos hasta el fin. Al pie de la cruz. Al igual que tu Madre que se hace Madre de los pobres humildes y crucificados. Madre de la Iglesia pobre para los pobres. Ella confía en la Providencia; goza de paz y alegría que nadie se las puede quitar.
