Moments of Trial and Fall, Triumph and Grace

Jesus is the Good News for all moments of joy, light, sorrow and glory. Are we his followers such Good News?

Matthew’s account of Jesus’ temptation has eleven verses; Luke’s thirteen. But there are just two in Mark’s. The two show that Jesus spends moments of trial and of peace in the desert.

Yes, there are moments of trial. For the Opponent tempts Jesus. And the struggle between Good and Evil does not stop here.

But is stronger, as his driving out of demons will later prove. And the moments of peace also show it.

No, there is no doubt that Jesus wins and enjoys moments of peace. For the account says that he is with wild beasts and that angels serve him. And it also means that it is the time for the Messiah to bring us back to the Garden of Eden and to bring in the kingdom of God.

So, the two verses say much. And one may read besides between the lines what C.S. Lewis) seems to say.

Moments of fall and of grace

It seems to C.S. Lewis that evil wins not so much as it tempts us in a grand way. It is better for the Father of lies that the temptation does not stand out. And that it does not look like it has to do with what is no doubt bad. That is why Satan turns up as an angel of light. And he makes moments of hardship look easy, too. And so, one falls little by little, till the shocking and worst fall happens, before one knows it.

Do not little moments of good works, by the same token, lead to great moments of good works also? After all, one usually starts small and lowly that God blesses and which leads to surprises (SV.EN II:351; SV.EN XII:8).

It is true, we have to have dreams and ideals (see SV.EN XII:82). But we are not to overlook the good that is before us, by the grace of God. That is, we are to “to do the things God shows us that he wants us to do.”

Also, grace has its moments (SV.EN II:499). That is to say, no moment of life comes by chance, but by Providence. For chance or coincidence is God’s way of staying anonymous (Einstein). Hence, we have to be in the hands of Providence. We will thus be at the right place at the right time.

Yes, God is the rhythm of life, though he hides. For he has made a covenant with Noah, his offspring and the animals. He is even in the waters of the flood so that they point to baptism. And Jesus is with those who received it. With them, yes, in all the mysteries of joy, light, sorrow and glory of life.

Lord Jesus, make our moments of lowliness this Lent as drill exercises and discipline. May they thus hone our skills that we may be ready for the great moment that startles and leaves all speechless (Is 52, 15). Namely, the moment of total surrender that our sharing in your Supper entails.

Momentos de prueba y caída, triunfo y gracia

Jesús es la Buena Nueva para todos los momentos de gozo, luz, dolor y gloria. ¿Lo somos nosotros los seguidores suyos?

Se nos cuenta de la tentación de Jesús con once versículos en el relato de Mateo; trece en el de Lucas. Y en el de Marcos, dos. Narran estos dos que Jesús pasa momentos de prueba y de paz en el desierto.

Hay, sí, momentos de prueba. Es que tienta a Jesús el que se le opone. Y seguirá la lucha entre el Bien y el Mal.

Pero como darán a conocer más tarde los exorcismos de Jesús, él es más fuerte. Lo dan a conocer también los momentos de paz.

No hay duda que triunfa Jesús en y goza de momentos de paz. Pues se nos cuenta que vive él entre alimañas y que los ángeles le sirven. Quiere decir esto también que se ha cumplido el plazo. Es tiempo para que, por el Mesías, se nos restaure en el Edén y se inaugure el reino de Dios.

Así que dicen mucho los dos versículos. Y dejan entrever también lo que dice C.S. Lewis.

Momentos de caída y de gracia

Le parece a C.S. Lewis que gana el mal no tanto porque se nos tienta a nosotros de forma dramática. Al Padre de la mentira le resulta mejor que el tentado no se dé cuenta de la tentación. Y que no se trate de algo que se toma por bien malo. Se disfraza de ángel de luz, pues, Satanás. También los momentos duros los presenta él como suaves. Así que poco a poco se cae, hasta que se caiga de muy mala forma, sin que se dé cuenta uno.

¿No de igual forma abren paso a momentos grandes de triunfo los momentos de hacer el bien que casi no se notan? Pues por lo común se comienza de manera humilde que Dios bendice y la que lleva a sorpresas (SV.ES II:263; (SV.ES XI:327).

Nos toca, sí, soñar y tener ideales (SV.ES XI:398). Pero no hay que pasar por alto «el bien que se nos presenta», por la gracia de Dios. Se ha de hacer «sí todo lo que Dios nos dé a conocer».

Y la gracia tiene sus momentos (SV.ES II:381). Es decir, no hay momento que llega por coincidencia, sino por la Providencia. Pues «la coincidencia es la forma en que Dios queda anónimo» (Einstein). Por lo tanto, nos hemos de poner en las manos de la Providencia. Así nos hallaremos en el lugar y el tiempo debidos.

Sí, Dios está presente en el ritmo de la vida, si bien se oculta él. Pues ha hecho pacto con Noé, sus proles y los animales. Por la presencia de Dios, aun las aguas del diluvio se hacen un símbolo del bautismo. Y está Jesús con los bautizados en todos los misterios de gozo, luz, dolor y gloria de la vida.

Señor Jesús, haz que los momentos humildes de la Cuaresma sean como ejercicios de capacitación y disciplina. Que estos nos preparen para el gran momento que asombra y ante el cual se cierra la boca (Is 52, 15). A saber, el momento de entrega total que supone tomar parte en tu Cena.
