Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A-2023
- Optimists, for They Rely on the Word
Jesus is at once the Good News of the kingdom and he that preaches it. He wants us to be optimists, preaching with him bountifully, not sparingly.
We can say that today’s three readings invite us to be optimists. The first gives hope and comfort to those of God’s chosen people who live in exile in Babylon. They have reason, that is to say, to be optimists due to God’s word that creates and bears much fruit.
The second reading, in turn, says that the experiences that make us groan and moan are like labor pains. They let us know that the birth of the new creation, our adoption, our redemption, is at hand. We Christians cannot be pessimists, then, but rather, optimists.
And the gospel spurs on the disciples, who are from the simple folks, to be optimists. For theirs is the grace to know the things of the kingdom of heaven.
But the wise and learned do not get the grace to know what the little folks are granted to know. The wise and learned hear, but they do not understand, they look, but they do not see. They do not understand with their hearts nor do they repent to find healing. Hence, they are easy prey to the Evil One. Or they give up right away in the face of conflicts and persecutions. Or they let worldly worries and the lure of power and wealth choke the word of the kingdom.
Yes, to the little folks like the disciples are granted to hear and to understand, too, the word. And they will bear fruit and will yield a hundred, sixty or thirtyfold. They will learn besides from their Teacher to sow bountifully, and not sparingly. Like him, they go about to do good.
Optimists, and so, maximalists
Those of the little flock will help in every way those who are poor and will make others help also. They will announce the Good News “by words and by works” (SV.EN XII:77-79). They will be maximalists, and not minimalists. That is to say, they will do the maximum, do more, nay, the most and the best they can to spread the word of the kingdom. Even to the point of giving themselves as food and drink to others, so that these may have life.
Lord Jesus, make optimists of us who are tight-fisted sowers. Let us put our trust in you, the Word made flesh, for you do the Father’s will and carry out what he asks you. Instill in us your zeal that will make us but feel bad that many souls wait for us still to help them (SV.EN XI:391).

- Optimistas, pues se fían de la Palabra
Jesús es a la vez la Buena Noticia del reino y el que la predica. Nos quiere optimistas para predicar con él a manos llenas, no de modo mezquino.
Se puede decir que nos llaman a que seamos optimistas las tres lecturas de hoy. La primera da esperanza y consuela a los del pueblo elegido de Dios que viven en el exilio en Babilonia. Es decir, tienen ellos razón para ser optimistas debido al poder de la palabra de Dios, que ésta crea y fertiliza.
La segunda lectura, a su vez, nos dice que las experiencias que nos hacen gemir y lamentar son como dolores de parto. Ellas nos dan a entender que está por nacer la nueva creación. Que ya llega la hora de ser nosotros hijos de Dios, la redención de nuestro cuerpo. Por lo tanto, no hay por qué ser pesimista; nos toca más bien a los cristianos ser optimistas.
Y el evangelio alienta a los discípulos, que son de la gente sencilla, a que sean optimistas. Pues a ellos se les concede conocer las cosas del reino de los cielos.
Mas se les ocultan a los sabios y entendidos esas cosas que se les revelan a los pequeños. Los sabios y entendidos oyen, pues, pero no entienden, miran, pero no ven. Ni entienden con el corazón ni se arrepienten para que se curen. Por lo tanto, se hacen presas fáciles del Maligno. O al momento se dan por vencidos frente a conflictos y persecuciones. O dejan que los afanes de la vida y las seducciones del poder y la riqueza ahoguen la palabra del reino.
Sí, a los pequeños cual los discípulos se les concede escuchar la palabra y entenderla también. Y ellos darán fruto y producirán ciento o sesenta o treinta por uno. Esos pequeños aprenderán además de su Maestro a sembrar a manos llenas y no de modo mezquino. Al igual que él, ellos pasarán por todas partes para hacer el bien.
Optimistas y, por lo tanto, maximalistas
Los del pequeño rebaño asistirán a los pobres de todas las formas y harán que otros les asistan también. Anunciarán así la Buena Noticia «de palabra y de obra» (SV.ES XI:393). Serán maximalistas, y no minimalistas. Es decir, harán lo máximo, harán más, o mejor dicho, lo más y lo mejor que puedan para difundir la palabra del reino. Incluso hasta que se les den por comida y bebida a los demás para que tengan vida éstos.
Señor Jesús, haz sembradores optimistas de los que somos mezquinos. Déjanos confiar en ti, la Palabra hecha carne, pues haces tú la voluntad del Padre y cumples su encargo. Infúndenos tu celo que nos lleve a que nos reprochemos que aún dejamos abandonadas a muchas almas (SV.ES XI:317).
