Risen from among Those Who Are Dead

Jesus, who died on the cross, has risen. Hence, we cannot look for him among the dead, but among the living.

Early in the morning, following the Sabbath right after Jesus’ death and burial, Mary of Magdala goes to the tomb. Aware of what Mark and Luke say, we can guess that she wants to anoint the Teacher’s body. His shows that she does not expect to meet the risen Jesus.

Rather, she anticipates to find in the tomb his corpse. That is to say, a stiff and cold body in which there is no breath or heartbeat. She and the other disciples, yes, have yet to grasp his telling them beforehand that he will rise from the dead. But we Christians today do not doubt that the one who died on the cross has risen from the dead. Thanks to the beloved disciple who will see and believe later.

And this disciple does not have a name of his own. That is so since he stands for all those who believe in Jesus, for each one of us believers. And we are the disciple that has no name if indeed we see and believe in the Risen One, and know his love.

The risen Christ is our life.

Jesus, yes, has risen from the dead. And we do no doubt it at all. But we just have to give witness to his resurrection. In a way that it will be hard to deny as we live the new life.

This is so since it not just Christ who has risen. We have risen, too (Comentarios a la Segunda Lectura, 6 y 8). And it is not that we hope to rise later, but that we have now been raised up. That is to say, Jesus lives after dying on the cross. And he now lives in us, which stays hidden though, but will come to light later.

But for Jesus to live in us means that we seek what is above where he is at God’s right hand. That we think of what is above, not of what is on earth where to live means to hoard and to consume.

In contrast, to live the new life that the Risen One shares with us means to seek the other’s good. Not our own good. The new yeast and the new batch point to this. To rise like Jesus is to love, to go about doing good. To go by the logic of love, of self-giving that brings life, to give up the body and to shed blood. It is to be “in every way,” “by words and by works,” the Good News for those who are poor (SV.EN XII:77-78).

Lord Jesus, make us living parts of your risen Body. Do not let greed that brings death take hold of us.

Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord (A)

Resucitado de entre los muertos

Jesús, el que murió en la cruz, ha resucitado. A él, por lo tanto, no se le puede buscar entre los muertos, sino entre los vivos.

Al pasar el sábado después de la muerte y la sepultura de Jesús, va al sepulcro muy temprano María Magdalena. Se puede tomar por cierto, a base de lo que nos cuentan Marcos y Lucas, que quiere ella ungir el cuerpo del Maestro. Y esto da a entender que ella no se espera encontrar con Jesús resucitado.

Espera más bien ella hallar en el sepulcro su cadáver. Es decir, un cuerpo tieso y frío, al que le falta el aliento y cuyo corazón no late. Sí, ella y los demás discípulos aún no han captado que Jesús resucitará de entre los muertos.

Pero los cristianos de hoy día no dudamos de que el que murió en la cruz ha resucitado. Gracias al discípulo amado que más tarde verá y creerá.

Y no se nos dice el nombre del discípulo. Es que él representa a todos y a cada uno de los creyentes en Jesús. Y somos ese discípulo si de verdad vemos y creemos en el Resucitado, y conocemos su amor.

Cristo resucitado es nuestra vida.

Jesús ha resucitado, sí, de entre los muertos. Y esto no lo dudamos para nada. Pero solo falta que demos testimonio de su resurrección de forma que, con nuestra vida nueva, no se pueda negar.

Es que no solo Cristo ha resucitado, sino que también hemos resucitado (Comentarios a la Segunda Lectura, 6 y 8). Y no es que esperemos resucitar más tarde, pues resucitados ahora nos quedamos. Es decir, vive Cristo tras morir en la cruz. Y vive él ahora en nosotros, lo que está oculto, pero quedará patente de modo glorioso más tarde.

Pero vivir Jesús en nosotros quiere decir que buscamos los bienes de arriba donde está él a la derecha de Dios. Que aspiramos a tales bienes, no a los de la tierra, en la que vivir es acaparar y consumir.

Vivir, en cambio, la vida nueva del Resucitado es buscar el bien de la otra persona. No el bien propio. A esto se refieren la levadura nueva y la masa nueva. Resucitar al igual que Jesús es amar, pasar por todas partes para hacer el bien. Es seguir la lógica del amor, del don de nosotros mismos que trae vida, es entregar el cuerpo y derramar la sangre. Es ser la Buena Noticia «de todas las formas», «de palabra y de obra», para los pobres (SV.ES XI:393).

Señor Jesús, haz que seamos miembros vivos de tu Cuerpo resucitado. No dejes que se adueñe de nosotros la codicia que lleva a la muerte.
