Baptize with the Holy Spirit and Fire

Jesus is the one the Father has anointed with the Holy Spirit. Hence, he cannot but baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire, and do good. The baptized are to do the same.

John the Baptist is simple and humble. He does not want to let down those he has baptized or will baptize. Hence, he admits that he baptizes with water; the one mightier than he will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire.

So, the Messiah is not John, but the one who has more power than he. This one should fill them with hope.

But Jesus does not hold on to his being the Messiah, but lets John baptize him. That is to say, he becomes one with those who, by their baptism, show they are sorry for their sins and ask to be forgiven. It turns out, then, that the one mightier than John is also humbler than he.

And his lowliness shows too in his prayer. Through it, he accepts that the Father is the source of all that he does (TWVDP 320). And he prays, yes, —says Luke—, at his baptism, one of the important moments of his life of service.

Jesus’ baptism is a crucial moment. For that is when it comes to light that he reveres his Father and he loves us humans (SV.EN VI:413).

In the first place, it comes out clearly that he is God’s dear and pleasing Son. And this means he is, in the second place, God’s Servant too. As the chosen and pleasing Servant who has the Holy Spirit’s anointing, he is sent to set up justice on earth. And so, merciful, gentle and firm, he opens the eyes of the blind, frees prisoners and victims of torture. That is to say, he goes about to do good.

Baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire

To go about to do good. This is also our task as disciples of the Son who is at the same time the suffering Servant. And we are to take it up; it is part of the basic truths of faith (Phil 2, 1-11; Heb 5, 8. 12). And for us to carry it out, Jesus has to baptize us with the Holy Spirit and fire.

This, of course, is about the pouring out of the Spirit for mission, which means we must pray. Luke says so in his gospel and in Acts (1, 14; 4, 31; 13, 2). No, we cannot do away with prayer if Jesus is to baptize us with the Spirit. For it is wholly up to the Lord of the harvest; we have to give up playing him. We are not fit to loosen the thongs of his sandals; his claim on us is total (see Ruth 4, 7-10).

And those who are baptized with the Holy Spirit are then led to the desert. There, they pass through the fire of temptations and mortifications. Then the Spirit leads out of the desert those who do not fall. For they are to preach the Good News to the poor. In every way, by word and deed (SV.EN XII:77-78). To tell prisoners and the oppressed that they are free, and to the blind that they have their sight back. And to proclaim a year of grace from Lord.

But their zeal, fire, does not have to do with revenge. For Jesus leaves it out (Is 61, 1-2; Lk 4, 18-19). So, they are meek, like the one who gives his body up and sheds his blood for sinners.

Lord Jesus, baptize us with the Holy Spirit and fire, so that we may be true Christians.

Bautizar con Espíritu Santo y fuego

Jesús es el Ungido por el Padre con el Espíritu Santo. Por lo tanto, no puede sino bautizar con Espíritu Santo y fuego, y hacer el bien. Los bautizados han de hacer lo mismo.

Es sencillo y humilde Juan Bautista. No quiere que se desilusionen los que se han bautizado o se van a bautizar. Admite, pues, que él bautiza con agua; el que puede más que él va a bautizar con Espíritu Santo y fuego.

Así que el Mesías no es Juan, sino el que puede más que él. A éste le tiene que esperar el pueblo.

Pero Jesús no hace alarde de ser el Mesías; se deja bautizar por Juan. Es decir, se une él a los que se bautizan para dar a conocer que se arrepienten de sus pecados y piden perdón. Resulta, por lo tanto, que el que puede más que Juan es también más humilde que él.

Y se manifiesta una vez más la humildad de Jesús en su oración. Por ella, reconoce él que el Padre es el autor de todo lo que él hace. Y ora, sí, —según Lucas—, en su bautismo, uno de los momentos importantes de su ministerio.

Es un momento decisivo el bautismo de Jesús. Pues en ese momento se revelan su religión para con su Padre y su amor para con los hombres (SV.ES VI:370).

En primer lugar, se manifiesta él, sí, como Hijo de Dios. Es el amado, el predilecto, lo que da a entender, en segundo lugar, que es también Siervo de Dios. Y como Siervo elegido, preferido, ungido con el Espíritu Santo, tiene la misión de implantar la justicia en la tierra. Así pues, misericordioso, suave y firme, les abre los ojos a los ciegos; liberta a los cautivos y a los torturados. Es decir, pasa haciendo el bien.

Bautizar con Espíritu Santo y fuego

Hacer el bien por doquier es también nuestra misión como discípulos del Hijo que es a la vez el Siervo sufriente. Se nos urge a aceptarla; ella forma parte de los rudimentos de la fe (Fil 2, 1-11; Heb 5, 8. 12). Y para que logremos cumplir con tal misión, nos tenemos que bautizar con Espíritu Santo y fuego.

Se trata, claro, de la efusión del Espíritu para la misión, lo que quiere decir que hay que orar. Así nos lo da a conocer Lucas en su evangelio y en los Hechos (1, 14; 4, 31; 13, 2). No, no se puede prescindir de la oración para que nos logremos bautizar con el Espíritu. Es que dependemos del todo del Señor de la viña; hemos de renunciar a toda pretensión de ser él. No merecemos desatarle la correa de sus sandalias; él tiene derecho absoluto sobre nosotros (véase Rut 4, 7-10).

Y a los bautizados con el Espíritu los lleva él luego al desierto. Allí pasan por el fuego de tentaciones y mortificaciones. A los que no se caen los aleja él del desierto para que prediquen la Buena Nueva a los pobres. De todas las formas, de palabra y de obra (SV.ES XI:393). Para que anuncien la libertad a los presos y a los oprimidos, y la vista a los ciegos y proclamen un año de gracia del Señor.

Pero su celo, fuego, nada tiene que ver con la venganza. Pues la omite Jesús (Is 61, 2; Lc 4, 18-19). Es por eso que son mansos, cual el que entrega su cuerpo y derrama su sangre por los pecadores.

Señor Jesús, no nos dejes de bautizar con Espíritu Santo y fuego, para que seamos verdaderos cristianos.
