Reach by Grace the Unreachable Star

Jesus is not of the world. Nor are his true disciples. They get to reach what we who are humans find hard to reach.

There is no doubt that the way Jesus teaches is not the same as others’ way. For he teaches with authority, not as the scribes. Also, there is such a radical meaning in what he teaches that it turns things upside down. And that is why we say at times that we cannot reach what he proposes. For instance, as we hear him warn us of the danger of wealth, we wonder and ask: “Then who can be saved?” And about not resisting one who is evil, do we not trade it for the just war theory?

What Jesus teaches amazes us, yes, and even scares us; it sounds foreign to us. And we find hard to reach what he points to. That is so since we know just this world, where to take revenge seventy-seven times does not turn out strange. But the Teacher, for his part, is not of the world. Hence, he does not conform to it nor does he adapt to it what he teaches. He does not even agree with the saying: “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.” Though it already limits revenge since one should not exact as retribution both eyes for an eye or the rest of the teeth for a tooth.

Still and all, the one who does not see as the world gets us. And so, he assures us who agree with the world that we can reach, by grace, what we find hard to reach. For God can do it all.

God enables us to reach what we human cannot reach.

Yes, God wants to help us to forgive not just once but also seventy times seven. But we have to admit, in the first place, that we are weak, that we cannot by our own power forgive.

In the second place, we must be aware that God is mad with love with us (Comentarios al evangelio 2). His love loses wholly; he gains nothing by loving us. He has no reason to love us: we are not great before him nor powerful nor true to his words.

Aware of this crazy love, we may just love as he does so that we learn to forgive without limits. So that we may do good to those who hate us and pray for those who persecute and slander us. So then, we shall be like our Father in heaven who forgives us our many and grievous sins. And we will also be free of the “serious fault” of not forgiving one who asks for forgiveness (SV.EN IX:218-220). For to refuse to forgive is to make fun of the one who asks for forgiveness. And this does not make for our being of one heart and one soul. Rather, it makes for our being sadder and meaner.

Lord Jesus, grant that we reach what we who conform to this world find hard to reach. Wrap us in grace and love so that we may be like our Father in heaven who is kind to the good and the bad. So that the Eucharist may indeed be communion for us. And make us yours in life and in death.

Alcanzar por gracia la estrella inalcanzable

Jesús no es del mundo. Ni lo son sus verdaderos discípulos. Logran alcanzar ellos lo que nos cuesta a los humanos alcanzar.

No cabe duda de que el modo de enseñar de Jesús es diferente. Es que enseña él con autoridad y no como los escribas. También cobra un sentido radical lo que él enseña de modo que todo se nos presenta boca abajo. Y es por eso que decimos a veces que lo que él propone esto no lo podemos alcanzar. Por ejemplo, al oirle advertirnos del peligro que corren los ricos, nos preguntamos asombrados: «Entonces, ¿quién puede salvarse?». Y referente al no hacer frente al que nos agravia, ¿no lo cambiamos por la teoría de la guerra justa?

Nos asombra, hasta nos espanta, sí, y nos resulta ajeno lo que Jesús nos enseña. Y a lo que va él esto lo hallamos duro de alcanzar. Es que conocemos este mundo no más, en el que no resulta extraño que uno se venga setenta veces siete. El Maestro, en cambio, no es del mundo. Por lo tanto, no se amolda él al mundo ni ajusta su enseñar al del mundo. Ni está de acuerdo él con el dicho: «Ojo por rojo, diente por diente», si bien tal ley pone ya límites a la venganza. Pues no hay que exigir los dos ojos como compensación por un ojo, ni los demás dientes por un diente.

Con todo, el no amoldado al mundo no deja de comprendernos. Por lo tanto, asegura que los conformados al mundo podemos alcanzar, por gracia, lo que nos cuesta alcanzar. Pues Dios lo puede todo.

Dios nos capacita para alcanzar lo que los humanos no podemos alcanzar.

Sí, Dios quiere ayudarnos para que logremos perdonar no solo una vez, sino también hasta setenta veces siete. Pero hemos de admitir, en primer lugar, que somos débiles, que no podemos por propia fuerza perdonar.

En segundo lugar, tenemos que darnos cuenta de que loco nos ama Dios Comentarios al evangelio 2). Es amor perdido a fondo; Dios nada gana con amarnos. Ni tiene él razón para amarnos: no somos grandes ante él ni poderosos ni fieles a sus palabras.

Conscientes de tal amor loco, quizá amemos como ama Dios de tal modo que aprendamos a perdonar sin límites. Y hagamos el bien a los que nos aborecen y recemos por los que nos persiguen y calumnian. Así pues, seremos como nuestro Padre en el cielo que nos perdona nuestras muchas y graves ofensas. Y así también nos libraremos de la «falta grande» de no perdonar al que nos pide perdón (SV.ES IX:261-263). Pues rehusar el perdón es burlarse del que lo pide. Y esto no lleva a que seamos de un solo corazón y una sola alma. No lleva, más bien, a más tristeza y enojo.

Señor Jesús, concédenos alcanzar lo que los ajustados a este mundo nos cuesta alcanzar. Envuélvenos en gracia y amor, para que seamos como nuestro Padre en el cielo que es bueno con los buenos y los malos. Para que la Eucaristía nos sea, de verdad, comunión. Y haz que seamos de ti en la vida y en la muerte.
