This collection of conferences was written from memory by some Daughters of Charity who were present at this conference with Vincent de Paul, and revised by a priest of the Congregation of the Mission.

Mr. Vincent commenced stating the subject of this conference consisted of two points.

The first point being how important it is to profit by the instructions given us in the Conferences, by the admonitions of our superiors, or by advice of any kind.

The second point was the means to profit by theses instructions and to put them in practice.

Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac: Rules, Conferences, and Writings

A multi-part introduction locates Vincent and Louise within the framework of the spirituality of 17th-century France and provides solid background information on them, as well as a true sense of their spirituality and practicality, insights into their relationship, and their influence on us today. Following the introduction are the original rules of the communities they founded.
