Whether at death I rest eternally in God or my heart stays restless will depend on whether during my mortal life my heart is in God as my treasure or I cherish worldly goods and rely on them.

My pursuit of the lasting city begins in this passing city.  I cannot arrive at my final destination without taking the beginning steps.

[http://www.utexas.edu/news/2014/05/16/admiral-mcraven-commencement-speech/ Admiral William McRaven] reminds me in a commencement speech of the importance of the first steps.  The first recommendation he gives is:  “If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.”

A task of little consequence?  If someone makes his bed, he assures himself of accomplishing the first task of the day and gaining a small sense of pride that may encourage him to do other tasks.  If one has just had a miserable day, when he comes home to a bed that is made, he will get the feeling that not everything is lost and that tomorrow will be better.

I hear here an echo of Jesus’ observation:  “The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones.  St. Vincent de Paul’s words and works also testify to the great importance of small beginnings.

This means it will be difficult for me to opt finally for the absolute good if I keep refusing to opt for the relative goods that come my way each day—say, that of paying attention to a needy person.  To put off from day to day my assisting the poor makes for my hearing all of a sudden, “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.”

Hence, Jesus should be for me right now the way, the truth and the life.  He is the answer now to the deepest human questions about the meaning of life that arise from the experience of joy and grief (GS 10).  Now is the time to live like Jesus Christ in order to die like Jesus Christ (Coste I:295).

We die as we live.  I will not remember God’s eternal hope-giving mercy if, never having felt it, I do not even know what it is.  And if I am not so compassionate, would I have the nerve to appear on judgment day before the Son of Man who nourishes me now with his body and blood?  Would I myself not depart from him out of shame?

Conmemoración de Todos los Fieles Difuntos-2014

:''Si hemos muerto con Cristo, creemos que también viviremos con él (Rom 6, 8)

Que al morir descanse yo eternamente en Dios o siga inquieto mi corazón, esto dependerá de si durante mi vida mortal está mi corazón en Dios como mi tesoro  o atesoro bienes mundanos, fiándome de ellos.

En esta ciudad pasajera comienza mi búsqueda de la ciudad duradera.  No puedo llegar a mi destino final sin tomar ahora los pasos iniciales.   

El [http://noticias.infocif.es/noticia/los-consejos-del-almirante-que-logro-abatir-bin-laden almirante William McRaven] me recuerda en un discurso de graduación la importancia de los primeros pasos.  La primera recomendación que da:   «Si quieres cambiar el mundo, empieza con hacerte la cama».

¿Una tarea de poca consecuencia?  Haciéndose la cama, uno se asegura de cumplir la primera de muchas tareas del día y se gana un pequeño sentido de orgullo que le anime a realizar otras tareas.  Y si uno acaba de pasar un día miserable, tendrá, al llegar a una cama hecha, la sensación de que no todo está perdido y que mañana será mejor.

Escucho aquí un eco de la observación de Jesús:  «El que es de fiar en lo menudo también en lo importante es de fiar; el que no es honrado en lo menudo tampoco en lo importante es honrado».  También las palabras y obras de san Vicente de Paúl dan testimonio de la suma importancia de los comienzos pequeños.

Esto es decir que difícilmente optaré al final por el bien absoluto si me voy negando a optar por bienes relativos que se me ponen delante cada día—por ejemplo, el de hacerle caso a un necesitado.  Dar largas de un día a otro a la asistencia de los pobres lleva a que de repente se oiga:  «Os aseguro que cada vez que no lo hicisteis con uno de éstos, los humildes, tampoco lo hicisteis conmigo»

Así que Jesús ha de ser para mí ahora mismo el camino, la verdad y la vida.  Él es la respuesta actual a los interrogantes humanos más profundos sobre el sentido de la vida que surgen de la experiencia de gozos y de tristezas (GS 10).  Ahora es el momento de vivir como Jesucristo para morir como Jesucristo (I:320).

Morimos como vivimos.  No me acordaré de la misericordia esperanzadora de Dios si, sin haberla sentido nunca, no sé siquiera qué es ella.  Y si soy hombre poco compasivo, ¿con qué cara podré presentarme el día de juicio ante el Hijo del Hombre que me alimenta ahora con su cuerpo y sangre?  ¿No me apartaría de él yo mismo por vergüenza?
