Vincentian Advocacy
In response to the call of the late Pope John Paul II to "addressed the underlying causes and long-term solutions to poverty" Vincentians are striving to serve as a "Voice of the Poor".
Advocacy - Vincentian Perspectives
Vincent de Paul
Blessed Frederic on Advocacy
- "If Catholics would make up their minds to publicize every tyranny of which they are certain, and to be certain of each one they want to publicize, I have no doubt that they would sooner or later command respect: but the times and upheavals make it necessary to check out and verify and not be satisfied with nearly, which ought never to satisfy a Christian conscience when defending the cause of truth is at stake. This must be said apropos of present controversies. I note with pleasure that men of substance are coming forward, and deem that M. de Montalebert has restated the question in all its importance, putting it where it always belonged: between the universal church and the universal state. "
Frederic Ozanam, Letter 522 to Ferdinand Velay, Lyon, July 12, 1840, Frederic Ozanam a Life in Letters, p. 362.
Importance of Advocacy Today
- Letter from Pope Benedict XVI on the Church’s Role in Being a “Voice for the Voiceless” March 22, 2006
- “God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong’ (I Corinthians 1:27). May this criterion of divine action, still in vigor today, encourage you not to be surprised, and less still to become discouraged, in the face of difficulties and misunderstandings. In fact, you know that through them you authoritatively participate in the prophetic responsibility of the Church, which strives to continue speaking up in defense of man, even when state politics or the majority of public opinion moves in the opposite direction. The strength of truth, in fact, is found in truth itself, not in the number of approvals it receives.”
Quotes from Pope Francis
- These words from Pope Francis can help us to reflect more deeply on how our experience of God’s love can open our hearts to solidarity with our neighbors, and move us to action. As you read these quotes, be attentive to what emotions you experience. Ask for the Holy Spirit to help you discern how you might be called to love-inspired action.
- “To love God and neighbor is not something abstract, but profoundly concrete: it means seeing in every person and face of the Lord to be served, to serve him concretely. And you are, dear brothers and sisters, in the face of Jesus.” (Pope Francis, Address during Visit at the Homeless Shelter “Dona Di Maria,” 5/21/13)
