Laborers of the Lord of the Harvest

God’s Anointed and Sent One is here. And with him comes great harvest. That is why there is need for not a few laborers.

God hears those who pray and ask, “May there be plenty of grain in the land. May it sway on the peaks of the mountains.” But, of course, to avail of the great harvest, many laborers should be available.

So, then, Jesus loses no time to call Simon and Andrew, James and John, the first laborers. He does so right after he proclaims, “The time has come. The kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the Good News.”

As it turns out, four laborers are not enough since news about him spreads over the whole region of Galilee. For the new way he teaches amazes those who hear and see him. He does not teach like the scribes, but with authority; he orders evil spirits, and they obey him. In fact, the whole town lines up at the door.

Other cures add to his fame (Mk 1, 29-34). As a result, the locals bring to him even after sundown all the sick and the possessed. And later, the following day, all will look for him; and he still has to go to other towns. It all goes to show that there is much work to do; four or even twelve apostles are not enough.

Ask the Lord of the harvest to send laborers to his harvest.

Yes, there is a great harvest. Hence, Jesus chooses seventy-two others; he sends them ahead of him, in pairs, to where he is about to go. That is to say, he looks for more than just any worker; one must be from those he will choose. From those whom the Lord of the harvest will send. And no one can help but he.

For the harvest is one of the great things the Almighty does. In the first place, it is all up to God; he gives it to those he loves while they sleep. The toil is his work, too; if he does not work, laborers work in vain. It is right, then, to ask missionaries to give all credit to God for the good they do (SV.EN VII:116; XI:314).

But Jesus chooses, the Lord of the harvest sends, not only those who seek holy orders. Not only those who look to the consecrated life. Choice and sending aim, too, at all Christians. For there is need for many laborers: young, old, men, women, people of all race, tongue, culture, lay, consecrated, ordained, wealthy, poor.

What matters most of all is that Christians are Jesus’ forerunners. That they go out of their comfort zone to reach all the outskirts (EG 20). For their task is to proclaim that he comes to bring in the kingdom of God.

And this kingdom asks that all repent, that our world be other than what it now is. Light will thus shine bright due to the laborers who are brave enough to see it and be it. And their hearts will rejoice also. Not for their awesome gains, but for the help they give to bring about the new creation. To make new the face of the earth.

Lord Jesus, grant that we be your laborers. Make us work like you; may our prayers and gatherings around your table lead us to the outskirts (SV.EN XI:33).

Obreros y obreras del Señor de la mies

El Ungido y Enviado de Dios llega. Y con él viene mucha mies. Es por eso que hay necesidad de no pocos obreros y obreras.

Dios oye la oración de los que le piden: «Que haya grano en abundancia en la tierra y la mies ondee en lo alto de los montes». Pero, claro, para disponer de la mies grande, a disposición del Señor de la mies han de estar muchos obreros.

Así pues, Jesús no pierde tiempo para llamar a Simón y Andrés, a Santiago y Juan, los primeros obreros. Lo hace él, sí, no más proclamar: «Se ha cumplido el tiempo; está cerca el reino de Dios. Arrepentíos y creed en la Buena Noticia».

Y resulta que no le basta con cuatro obreros. Pues su fama se extiende por todas partes en la región de Galilea. Es que se asombran las gentes de su enseñar nuevo. No enseña al igual que los escribas, sino con autoridad; da órdenes a los malos espíritus, y lo obedecen.

Otras curaciones dan más a su fama (Mc 1, 29-34). Y como resultado, los vecinos le llevan, aun después de ponerse el sol, todos los enfermos y endemoniados. De hecho, toda la población se apiña a la puerta. Y más tarde, el día siguiente, todos lo buscarán; y le tocará aún predicar en otros pueblos. Todo eso quiere decir que hay mucho trabajo por hacer; no son bastantes cuatro o aun doce apóstoles.

Pedir al Señor de la mies que mande obreros a su mies

Es mucha, sí, la mies. Por lo tanto, escoge Jesús a otros setenta y dos; irán por delante, de dos en dos, adonde piensa ir él. Es decir, no se busca obrero cualquiera; tiene que ser de los que escoja él. De los que mande el Señor de la mies, al cual hay que pedir ayuda.

Es que la mies es una de las grandes obras que hace el Poderoso. En primer lugar, la mies depende de Dios; él se la da a sus amados mientras duermen. En segundo lugar, la labor es obra también de él; no trabajar él quiere decir trabajar en vano los obreros. Con razón, se les pide a los misioneros que atribuyan a Dios no más el bien que hacen (SV.ES VII:91; XI:239).

Pero elige Jesús, envía el Señor de la mies, no solo a los que buscan las órdenes sagradas. No solo a los que se inclinan a la vida consagrada. La elección y la misión son para todos los cristianos también. Pues hay necesidad de muchos obreros: jóvenes, mayores, hombres, mujeres, personas de toda raza, lengua, cultura, laicas, consagradas, ordenadas, pobres, ricas.

Lo decisivo es que sean los cristianos precursores de Jesús. Que salgan de la propia comodidad para llegar a todas las periferias (EG 20). Pues su tarea es proclamar que llega él para iniciar el reino de Dios.

Y ese reino pide que se arrepientan todos, que nuestro mundo sea diferente de lo que es. Así brillará la luz por ser los obreros tan valientes para ver la luz y ser la luz. Y se alegrarán también sus corazones, no por tener triunfos tremendos. Sino por contribuir a que brote la nueva creación, a que sea nueva la faz de la tierra.

Señor Jesús, concédenos ser tus obreros. Haz que trabajemos al igual que tú; que nuestras oraciones y reuniones en torno a tu Mesa nos lleven a las periferias (SV.ES XI:734).
