Program of the One Anointed with the Spirit

Jesus is Good News to the poor. To be such news is his program as the One that the Father has anointed with the Holy Spirt and sent.

True to what the voice from heaven told him at his baptism, the Son takes up the Servant’s program. We heard two Sundays ago that such program was to set up justice on earth gently and firmly.

And today, Luke’s gospel cites the Servant’s program as the latter takes it. It is Jesus who finds and reads it (Is 61, 1-2). And what he does at the synagogue in Nazareth is told in detail. No doubt, the details highlight the great importance of the program that he makes his own.

In fact, all those in the synagogue is all eyes and ears; they are full of expectation. For news about him has spread throughout Galilee and people have spoken well of him. Is he a match to the fame and the praises? But those that are there could also be wondering about his leaving out “vengeance” in his reading of the text.

Maybe they think that they are in a way like those Isaiah addressed. And like those who were at the reading of the Law that Ezra led. For like those who knew the woes of the exiles in Babylon, they also groan under the heavy yoke of Rome. Does it bother them that Jesus left out vengeance?

But his comment on the text is no more than, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” No more, no less. He thus makes known to us his program. And he shows at the same time that there is no vengeful bone in his body. Hence, there is no place for revenge in his program.

The program of option for the poor, friend and foe, come what may

Jesus Christ is option for the poor, the captives, the blind, and fellowship with those on the outskirts, in the flesh. And they are chosen for no other reason than that they are poor, captives, blind, oppressed, marginalized. That is to say, for God to reign, he has to root out all that goes against his being the Father who seeks the good of all his children. Hence, Christians, those bear the name of Christ, the Messiah or Anointed One, are to go to the poor.

To go to the poor means to find God (SV.EN IX:199. 252). And to find too “the first of the poor, the poorest of the poor” (SV.EN XI:26).

It is to find out also that we rely, wholly on God, that no one can be poorer than us. And yes, not rarely those who are not loveable are the ones that make us see that we are sinful and weak. And so, as Pope Francis does not tire of saying, “the poor are true evangelizers.” They help us to stay simple, humble and open to what lies outside and ahead (SV.EN XII:81). That is why we will keep asking humbly time and again, “Lord, if you were in my place, what would you do?” (SV.EN XI:314).

Lord Jesus, we admit before the Father that we are weak (SV.EN IX:284). And we ask him to give us, through your merits, the grace to be true to your program by the strength of your Spirit. Make us live by your word and by your flesh and blood. For if we are not fed nor feed others so, we will perish.

Programa del Ungido con el Espíritu

Jesús es Buena Noticia para los pobres. Ser esa noticia es su programa como el Ungido con el Espíritu Santo y el Enviado del Padre.

Fiel a lo que, al bautizarse, le dijo la voz del cielo, el Hijo hace suyo el programa del Siervo. El programa de éste se nos concretó hace dos domingos como el de implantar de modo suave y firme la justicia en la tierra.

Y hoy se nos cita, en el evangelio de Lucas, el programa del Siervo, como éste lo toma. Es Jesús el que lo halla y lee (Is 61, 1-2). Y se describe con todo detalle su intervención en la sinagoga de Nazaret. No cabe duda de que los detalles resaltan lo muy importante que es el programa que Jesús hace suyo.

De hecho, todos tienen los ojos fijos en él. Y con razón están en expectación. Él ha adquirido fama en Galilea y la gente ha hecho lenguas de él; ¿se merece tal fama, tal alabanza? Pero puede ser también que los presentes se pregunten sobre la omisión de «desquite» en la lectura del texto.

Quizá se ven no del todo diferentes de los que a quienes se dirigían Isaías. Ni de los que formaban parte de la asamblea en la que presidía Esdras. Es que como aquellos que conocían las penas del destierro en Babilonia, gimen también bajo el pesado yugo romano. ¿Acaso no se molestan los paisanos de Jesús por no incluir él la venganza?

Pero al comentar él al texto, dice con sencillez: «Hoy se cumple esta Escritura que acabáis de oír». Nada más y nada menos. Y así, nos da a conocer él, sí, su programa. Da a entender a la vez que no hay nada de venganza en él. Y, por lo tanto, ella no forma parte de su programa.

El programa de optar por el bien de los pobres, sin mirar a quién, sin excluir ni a los enemigos

Jesucristo encarna la opción por los pobres, los cautivos, los ciegos, los oprimidos, y la solidaridad con los en las afueras. Y la sola razón por la que se elige a ellos es que son pobres, cautivos, ciegos, oprimidos, marginados. Pues reinar Dios no puede sino querer decir erradicar todo lo que va en contra de ser él el Padre que busca el bien de todos sus hijos e hijas. De ahí que nos toque a los cristianos, a los que llevamos el nombre de Cristo, el Mesías o Ungido, ir a los pobres.

Ir a los pobres es encontrar a Dios (SV.ES IX:240. 297). Y al «primer pobre, el más pobre entre los pobres» (SV.ES XI:725).

Es descubrir también que dependemos de Dios del todo, que no hay nadie que pueda ser más pobre que nosotros. Y sí, no rara vez, son los no amables los que nos hacen reconocer que somos débiles y pecaminosos. Así que, como no se cansa de repetirlo el Papa Francisco, «los pobres son verdaderos evangelizadores». Ellos nos ayudan a permanecer sencillos, humildes and abiertos a lo que nos espera fuera y en el futuro (SV.ES XI:397). Es por eso que no dejaremos de preguntar humildes: «Señor, si tú estuvieras en mi lugar, ¿qué harías?» (SV.ES XI:240).

Señor Jesús, ante el Padre nos admitimos débiles (SV.ES:332-333). Y le pedimos por tus méritos que él nos dé la gracia de ser fiel a tu programa por fuerza de tu Espíritu. Hanos vivir de tu palabra y de tu carne y sangre. Pues si así no nos alimentamos ni alimentamos a los demás, pereceremos.
