Goodness That Matters and Is Decisive

Jesus himself is the goodness that those who are truly good store up in their hearts and from which they draw good things.

Jesus teaches us that what we keep inside us plays a decisive role. If goodness is what we have inside us, then good words and good deeds come out of us. On the other hand, evil in our hearts means evil words and evil deeds on our part. In other words, a good tree bears good fruit, and a rotten tree bears rotten fruit.

Yes, what we keep in our hearts is very important. For on it depends the fruit that we bear and it determines who we are or what we are made of. And to be what we should be means to keep in our hearts the goodness that Jesus embodies.

After all, Jesus’ teaching and example open our eyes so that we may not walk in darkness. They show us the truth by which we ought to live, so that we may be true to ourselves. So that those, too, who look to us for guidance may find fulfillment. That is to say, Jesus is the truth that sets us free. He, of course, does not want anyone to fall into any kind of pit or trap.

So, Jesus is the Teacher who trains us to be like him. And he practices what he teaches. He is not a hypocrite who says one thing and does another. His word spells truth, goodness, oneness, beauty. Moreover, he seeks our good. He is not one of those who show themselves superior to others by catching them in wrongdoing or negligence. They go around correcting others without correcting themselves first.

And Jesus is surely after our good; he is after us not after himself. For he lays down his life for us, giving up his body and shedding his blood.

Lord Jesus, as we feed on your word, body and blood, may we store up your goodness in our hearts. And may our lives be full of you (SV.EN I:276). Pour out on us the true spirit of prayer, fasting and almsgiving so that our efforts may not be in vain. Make us light of the world and salt of the earth through our words and deeds. And grant that, as we lovingly tell others their failings, we humbly acknowledge ours as well (see SV.EN XI:271; SV.EN XII:82).

Bondad que importa y es decisiva

Jesús mismo es la bondad que atesoran en sus corazones los verdaderamente buenos y de la cual sacan el bien.

Enseña Jesús que lo que guardamos en nuestro interior juega un papel decisivo. Si es la bondad que tenemos atesorada dentro de nosotros, entonces saldrán de nosotros palabras y obras buenas. En cambio, abrigar nosotros la maldad quiere decir palabras y obras malas por nuestra parte. En otras palabras, árbol sano, fruto sano, y árbol dañado, fruto dañado.

Nos resulta muy importante, sí, lo que guardamos en nuestro corazón. Pues, de esto depende el fruto que damos y determina quiénes somos o de qué estamos hechos. Y para lograr ser lo que debemos ser, nos basta con atesorar en nuestros corazones la bondad que Jesús personifica.

Después de todo, la enseñanza y el ejemplo de Jesús nos abren los ojos, para que no caminemos en las tinieblas. Nos revelan la verdad a la que debemos ajustar nuestra vida. Así seremos fieles a nosotros mismos y conseguirán también la autorrealización los que nos piden indicaciones. Es decir, Jesús es la verdad que nos haga libres. No quiere él, desde luego, que caigamos en un hoyo o en una trampa.

Así que Jesús es el Maestro que quiere que seamos como él. Y practica lo que predica. No es un hipócrita que dice una cosa y hace otra. Su palabra significa la verdad, la bondad, la unidad, la belleza. Busca además nuestro bien. No cuenta él entre los con pretensiones de superioridad, quienes rondan buscando a quiénes cazar. Van ellos corrigiendo a los demás sin aplicarse a sí mismos primero la corrección.

Y Jesús busca ciertamente nuestro bien y no el bien propio ni los intereses propios. Pues él da la vida por nosotros, entregando su cuerpo y derramando su sangre.

Señor Jesús, que los que nos alimentamos de tu palabra, cuerpo y sangre atesoremos tu bondad en nuestros corazones. Y que nuestra vida esté llena de ti (SV.ES I:320). Infúndenos el verdadero espíritu de oración, ayuno y limosna, para que nuestros esfuerzos no queden sin recompensa. Hazque que mediante nuestras palabras y acciones seamos la luz del mundo y la sal de la tierra. Y concédenos a los que con amor corregimos a los demás corregir también a nosotros mismos (véaseSV.ES XI:197, 398).
