Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A-2014

Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him (Rom 8, 9)

We are invited to a relaxing and renewing life together.

And we can approach without apprehension the one who invites us. He reflects his merciful and gracious Father. He is not intimidating. He is not a warrior king who comes demanding vengeance, but rather a royal Savior, just and meek, who rides on triumphant on an ass for the cause of truth and justice. His kingdom spreads throughout the world, not through military conquest, but through the promotion of justice and peace. Jesus eliminates instruments of war.

He does not reject anyone. Hence, we can present ourselves as we are, without pretenses. For Jesus sees the heart and welcomes besides the marginalized. His words and deeds clearly show his preferential option for the poor and simple people. They are the ones to whom he wishes to reveal his intimate and unique knowledge of the Father, in accordance with the Father’s disposition to reveal to them what he has hidden from the wise. Though he is firmer than the one who is not a reed swayed by the wind, the Lord’s Servant does not, however, break a bruised reed.

And we have much reason to feel at home with Jesus, those of us who: are anxious about things we need to live and which we can hardly attain in an atmosphere of poverty, unemployment, evictions and injustices; have succumbed to a fast-paced lifestyle; are harried by the lure of money, security and comfortable life; are worried about our salvation and multiply devotions that we cannot omit without feeling upset (cf. St. Vincent de Paul’s advice: Coste I 86; X 353), yet disregarding the indispensability of grace and of the vivifying Spirit. To us Jesus offers relief and rest.

The carpenter from Nazareth supplies us with a yoke whose selling-point, so to speak, is its quality of being easy and light. It is unlike the yoke traded today by those who take the place of those learned teachers who imposed on the people unbearable burdens which they themselves would not move even slightly, the same ones who complied scrupulously with everything except with the most essential.

It is because the responsibility Jesus teaches is not prescribed from the outside. He writes it rather in our hearts. We get infected with it from living with him, the meek and humble of heart. Imbued with his spirit of daring commitment to the Kingdom, we learn to put our absolute trust in God, to renounce all greed, to fulfill his mandate, “Do this in memory of me.” Thus are communion and unity represented and realized.

El que no tiene el Espíritu de Cristo no es de Cristo (Rom 8, 9)

Estamos invitados a una convivencia relajadora y renovadora.

Y podemos acercarnos sin recelo al que nos convida. Él refleja a su Padre compasivo y misericordioso. No infunde miedo. No es un rey guerrero que viene exigiendo venganzas, sino un Salvador real, justo y humilde, que en un asno cabalga victorioso por la verdad y la justicia. Su reino se extiende por todos los confines no por conquista militar, sino por la promoción de la justicia y la paz. Jesús elimina los instrumentos de guerra.

No rechaza a nadie. Por eso, podemos presentarnos tal cual somos, sin pretensiones. Pues, Jesús ve el corazón y acoge además a los marginados. Sus palabras y sus obras manifiestan claramente su opción preferencial por la gente pobre y sencilla. Son estas personas a quienes él ha querido revelar su conocimiento íntimo y único del Padre, en conformidad con la disposición del Padre de revelar a ellas lo que ha escondido a los sabios. Aunque más firme que el que no es una caña sacudida por el viento, el Siervo del Señor no quiebra, sin embargo, una caña cascada.

Y mucha razón para sentirnos a gusto con Jesús tenemos nosotros: los afanados por las cosas que necesitamos para vivir y las cuales difícilmente conseguimos en un ambiente de pobreza, desempleo, deshaucios e injusticias; los que hemos sucumbido al estilo de vida ajetreado; los agobiados por la seducción del dinero, la seguridad y el bienestar; los que, preocupados por nuestra salvación, multiplicamos devociones, las que no podemos omitir sin que nos turbemos (cf. dos consejos de san Vicente de Paúl: I 149; IX 932), mas descartando la imprescindibilidad de la gracia y del Espíritu vivificador. A nosotros nos ofrece Jesús alivio y descanso.

El carpintero de Nazaret suministra un yugo cuyo factor de venta, digamos, es su calidad de llevadero y ligero. Este yugo no es como el yugo con el cual comercian hoy los que hacen lo que aquellos maestros entendidos que imponían a la gente cargas insoportables, sin que las moviesen ellos mismos ni un poquito, los mismos que cumplían escrupulosamente con todo menos con lo más esencial.

Es que la responsabilidad que enseña Jesús no se prescribe desde fuera. Él la escribe más bien en nuestro corazón. Nos contagiamos de ella viviendo con él, el manso y humilde de corazón. Imbuidos de su espíritu de entrega denodada al Reino, aprendemos a confiar absolutamente en Dios, renunciar toda codicia, y cumplir auténticamente su consigna: «Haced esto en memoria mía». Así se significan y se realizan la comunión y la unidad.
