Win with the Victorious over the World

Jesus has overcome the world. That is why those who put their faith and trust in him cannot but win in face of trials, woes, doubts.

It seems that it would not be hard for the early Church to win over others. For others spoke highly of the Christians and joined them in great numbers. Yet the truth is that it has not always been smooth sailing for the Church, not early on and not now.

There is no doubt that the first Christians enjoyed fellowship, communion, peace. But soon Ananias and Sapphira lied. Then there was the summons to stand before the Sanhedrin. After this, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews. And after Stephen’s death by stoning, a full-blown persecution took place. Later on, dispute arose between those who were for the circumcision and those who were against it. Paul and Barnabas, of course, led those who were against, but the two ended up separating due to Mark.

And such stories of the first Christians are our stories, too, today. So, it is worth it to read the Acts of the Apostles and see parallels with today. For to read from where we stand their stories will open our eyes to the truth that Jesus is with us. He, God-with-us in good times and in bad, is the proof beyond question that God is with and for us. Who then can be against us?

Yes, Jesus sees to it that those who believe and trust in him will win and not sink ever. They live by him and his words. Hence, no evil shall hurt them and they shall lack nothing, though disaster seems near (CRCM II:2). As did the first Christians, true disciples today will come out of trials, woes, doubts, better and stronger than before. They listen more to Jesus and to one another, are more understanding, inclusive, universal, catholic. They know, of course, that to win with Jesus means to lose.

Lord Jesus, we put our faith and trust in you, not in ourselves or [philosophy, theology or speeches; you alone can make us win. Let us have our fill of your word, of your body and blood, so that we may have the strength, in times of crisis and trials, to go up with you to the holy mountain. So that we may be willing, too, to give up our bodies and shed our blood for others, even to march into hell for heaven’s cause, to be cut off from you for the sake of our brothers and sisters.

Ganar con el vencedor del mundo

Jesús ha vencido al mundo. Es por eso que los que creen y confían en él no pueden menos que ganar frente a las pruebas, adversidades, dudas.

A la Iglesia naciente, al parecer, no le costaría ganar para Cristo a los demás. Pues los demás se hacían lenguas de los cristianos y crecía el número de éstos. Pero el navegar de la Iglesia no ha sido siempre plácido; todo no le ha sido coser y cantar. Ni en sus comienzos ni ahora en nuestros días.

No cabe duda de que los primeros cristianos se gozaron de la solidaridad, la comunión, la paz. Pero pronto se mintieron Ananías y Safira. Luego hubo el juicio ante el Sanedrín. Después, se quejaron los cristianos de lengua griega contra los de lengua hebrea. Y, tras morir apedreado Esteban, se desató una persecución atroz. Más tarde, se vieron en graves conflictos los del partido de la circuncisión y los que estaban en contra. De éstos eran Pablo y Bernabé, pero los dos al fin se separaron el uno del otro debido a Marcos.

Y la historia de los primeros cristianos es nuestra también. Vale la pena, por lo tanto, leer los Hechos de los Apóstoles y ver los paralelos con lo actual. Pues leer desde nuestra situación lo que se nos cuenta nos abrirá los ojos a la verdad de que está Jesús con nosotros. Él, Dios-con-nosotros en los tiempos buenos y malos, es prueba de que Dios está de nuestra parte. ¿Quién, pues, podrá estar contra nosotros?

Ganar con Jesús

Vela, sí, Jesús que los que creen y confían en él logren ganar y no se hundan. Ellos viven de él y de sus palabras. Por lo tanto, el mal no les dañará y no les faltará nada, si bien les parece que lo que les queda no más es el perecer (RCCM II:2).

Y al igual que los primeros cristianos, los verdaderos discípulos de hoy salen de las pruebas, adversidades y dudas, mejores y más fuertes que antes. Escuchan más a Jesús y los unos a los otros, son más comprensivos, inclusivos, universales, católicos. Saben, claro, que ganar con Jesús quiere decir perder.

Señor Jesús, creemos y confiamos en ti, no en nosotros mismos, ni en la filosofía ni en la teología ni los discursos; solo tú nos puedes hacer ganar. Sácianos con tu palabra, con tu cuerpo y sangre, para que contigo subamos fortalecidos al monte santo. Para que también estemos dispuestos aun a entregar el cuerpo y derramar la sangre por los demás, a ir al infierno por las causas del cielo, a ser proscritos lejos de ti por el bien de los demás.
