Rush to Condemn and to Exclude

Lowly, meek and patient, Jesus bears with the weak and annoying. We learn from him to bear with one another and not rush to judge.

A church lector tells another church lector that he would love to be heaven’s gatekeeper. That is to say, to be the one separating one from another those at the gate seeking to get in. He would place the politicians from the Republican party on his right and those of the Democratic party on his left. And right away, the other lector replies: “I, on the other hand, would place the democrats on my right and the republicans on my left.” Both lectors, no doubt, generalize and rush to judge and exclude.

And, in today’s gospel, the servants seem to rush to solve the problem of the weeds. For they suggest to their master that they go and pull out the weeds. But they do not know what they say; they do not get it as does their master.

No, we humans do not know, not rarely, what to do, what to say, what to ask. And we end up joining those who are usually on a rush. So, it is good that the Spirit comes to help us. And, for the same reason, it will be wise of us to heed Jesus’ call, “Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

We heard him last Sunday make the same call after telling the parable of the sower. But he addressed it to the crowds. But today, he means it for his disciples. One can rightly say, then, that he wants them to be lowly, meek and patient.

Not to rush to condemn and exclude

Those Jesus have chosen are from the little and simple folks. They get to know things about the kingdom of heaven that the wise and learned do not get to know. Which means that Christians should not be like the smug Pharisee who thinks he is righteous. He also despises others and sets himself apart from them.

And Christians can rush to judge others and be as militant, rigid, separatist and impatient as the Zealots and the Essenes of Qumran. Are there not Christians who would bar other Christians from communion? They might not believe that the Eucharist “is not a prize for the perfect but a powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak” (EG 47).

But we are to be like Christ who eats with sinners. He embodies the teaching that to have true might means to show patience and mercy, to give hope to sinners. We should not be like those that St. Augustine says are hopeless creatures. Those who, the less they look at their sins, the more they focus on the sins of others.

We are to trust, besides, the Lord of the harvest and to do our best to be the good seed. To be also the small mustard seed that becomes a welcoming large plant, and the yeast that brings about desired change.

Lord Jesus, do not let us rush in a way that hurts others. Grant that we trust Providence and learn to “make haste slowly” (SV.EN V:400).

Apresurarse a condenar y excluir

Jesús soporta humilde, manso y paciente a los débiles y molestos. De él se aprende a soportarse unos a otros y no apresurarse a juzgar.

Dice un lector de una iglesia a otro lector que le gustaría ser el portero del cielo. Es decir, el que separará unos de otros a los que estén a la puerta y busquen entrar. Pondrá él a su derecha a los políticos del partido republicano y a su izquierda a los del partido demócrata. Y al momento replica el otro lector: «Yo, en cambio, pondré a mi derecha a los políticos demócratas y a mi izquierda a los políticos republicanos». Los dos lectores, por supuesto, caen en la tentación de generalizar y de apresurarse a juzgar y excluir.

Y parecen apresurarse los criados, en el evangelio de hoy, a solucionar el problema de la cizaña. Pues le dan a entender a su señor que están dispuestos a arrancarla. Pero no saben lo que dicen; no se les ocurre lo que al dueño del campo de trigo.

De verdad, los hombres no sabemos, no pocas veces, qué hacer, qué decir, qué pedir. Y terminamos con ir con la gente que suelen apresurarse. Está bien, por lo tanto, que el Espíritu venga a ayudarnos. Y, por la misma razón, nos conviene prestar atención a la llamada de Jesús: «El que tenga oídos, que oiga».

Ya hizo el Maestro la misma llamada tras contar la parábola del sembrador del domingo pasado. Y la dirigió él a todos sus oyentes. Pero hoy se la dice él a sus discípulos. Con razón se puede decir que se les pide que sean humildes, mansos y pacientes.

No apresurarse a condenar y excluir

Los elegidos de Jesús son de los pequeños, de la gente sencilla. A ellos se les da a conocer las cosas del reino del cielo que se les ocultan a los sabios y entendidos. Lo que quiere decir que los cristianos no han de ser como el fariseo que se tiene por justo y está seguro de sí mismo. Tiene él en menos también a los demás.

Y los cristianos son capaces de apresurarse a juzgar a los demás y hacerse militantes, rígidos, separatistas e impacientes como los zelotes y los esenios de Qumrán. No faltan cristianos que no quieren que se les dé la comunión a otros cristianos. Quizás no crean que la Eucaristía «no es un premio para los perfectos sino un generoso remedio y un alimento para los débiles» (EG 47).

Pero hemos de ser como Cristo que come con los pecadores. Encarna él la enseñanza de que ser el soberano que lo puede todo quiere decir mostrarse paciente y compasivo. Y darles esperanza a los pecadores. No hemos de hacernos «hombres sin remedio». Son —dice san Agustin— los que «dejan de atender a sus propios pecados para fijarse en los de los demás».

Y fiaremos del Señor de la mies y haremos lo mejor que podamos para ser la buena semilla. También la pequeña semilla de mostaza que se hará un arbusto muy alto y acogedor. Y la levadura que produzca los cambios deseados.

Señor Jesús, no le dejes ni a uno de nosotros cristianos apresurarse de modo que hiera a los demás. Haz que fiemos de la Providencia y aprendamos a apresurarnos de modo lento (SV.ES V:374).
