Fears the Sent Ones Must Overcome

Jesus comes to his own people and they persecute him. His fate is the fate, too, of his disciples. They waver, then, due to their fears.

Jesus senses the fears that his apostles harbor. These are the twelve disciples he sends to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And their fears are not groundless. After all, he has just told the Twelve of the persecutions that await them.

Still and all, he encourages three times to get over their fears. In the first place, the missionaries are to announce boldly the Good News in such a way that all hear and grasp it well. It, in any case, cannot but be brought to the open and made known. Nothing, no one, can slow it down or chain it.

In the second place, if one cannot avoid being afraid, it is God that one has to fear, not humans. He is mightier than humans. Yet the Almighty is, at the same time, more loving and kinder than human fathers. So, in the third place, his sons and daughters who work with him and with his Sent One can count on his protection. It is enough for the fearful children to put their trust in their Father in heaven. He cares for the sparrow; he cares, for sure, for those who are worth more than sparrows.

No, Christ’s missionaries should not fear the wolves among them, that is to say, fellow believers who reject them. They cannot accept Christ and those he sends, in part, because they think they are more righteous than them. They, after all, keep the law strictly and defend it staunchly. And so, one could very well say of them what St. Gregory the Great says of arrogant teachers. These do not listen and hardly talks to those they deem to be below them; they just lay down the law.

Christians can be wolves, too. Those Jesus sends should not fear them.

Lord Jesus, help us get over our fears of the wolves in our midst, of arrogant leaders who are after honor, power and wealth. Far be it from us to play the master (SV.EN XI:313). And grant that we do not betray, due to the divisions and factions we foster, what your Supper means (see 1 Cor 11, 17-29). Give us, besides, the courage and strength to go on a “synodal journey” so that your gracious gift overflow for all.

Miedos que han de superar los enviados

Jesús viene a los de su pueblo y ellos lo persiguen. El destino de él les corresponde a sus discípulos. Vacilan, pues, éstos por sus miedos.

Intuye Jesús los miedos que abrigan sus apóstoles, los doce discípulos enviados a las ovejas descarriadas de Israel. Y esos miedos no carecen de fundamento. Después de todo, Jesús acaba de avisar a los doce de las persecuciones que ellos sufrirán.

Con todo, tres veces los anima él a que superen sus miedos. En primer lugar, los misioneros han de anunciar audaces la Buena Nueva de modo que bien se oiga y se capte. Ella, de todos modos, no puede sino descubrirse y saberse. Nada, nadie, la puede detener ni encadenar.

En segundo lugar, si el miedo no se puede evitar, es Dios a quien hay que temer, no a los hombres. Él puede más que los hombres. Pero el Todopoderoso es a la vez mucho más amoroso y bondadoso que un padre humano. En tercer lugar, pues, sus hijos e hijas que obran con él y con su Enviado, Jesús, pueden contar con su protección. Les basta a los temerosos con confiar en su Padre del cielo. Cuida él hasta de los gorriones y, por supuesto, de los que tienen más valor que los gorriones.

No, los misioneros de Cristo no han de tener miedo a los lobos entre ellos. Éstos son los creyentes, como ellos, que los rechazan. En parte, no pueden aceptar a Cristo y a los enviados de él, pues se creen más justos que ellos. Después de todo, esos justos guardan la ley de modo estricto y la defienden con firmeza. Se puede decir, pues, de ellos lo que dice san Gregorio Magno de los que enseñan con arrogancia. Éstos no miran y ni se dignan hablar a los que toman por inferiores a ellos; les imponen su dominio.

Los cristianos pueden ser lobos también. No los han de temer los enviados de Jesús.

Señor Jesús, ayúdanos a superar nuestros miedos a los lobos en medio de nosotros, a los líderes arrogantes que buscan honores, poder y dinero. Que jamás tengamos la pasión de parecer superior ni de ser el maestro (SV.ES XI:238). Y no dejes que traicionemos, por promover nosostros las divisiones y las facciones, nuestras celebraciones de tu Cena (1 Cor 11, 17-29). Danos también la valentía y la fuerza para emprender un «viaje sinodal» que lleve a que el don de Dios desborde sobre todos.
