Feed Other Humans First of All

Jesus seeks to feed us with his body and blood, so that we may have life to the full. He loves us, yes, to the end.

For sure, the thirty pieces of silver cannot but feed even more Judas Iscariot’s greed. But does the traitor sell Jesus for a trifle, asking no high price for him!

And, indeed, there is no price tag for the one whom Judas sells; he is beyond all value. After all, he is the rightful heir to the throne of David, even if he comes lowly, riding a donkey. Not a horse of war. Still, he has the right to all. Hence, he can requisition a donkey, a house, or any other thing he needs.

He also has the power to cure diseases and illnesses of all kinds. Besides, he can feed big crowds with just a few loaves and fish. No, there is no doubt that he is worth much more than thirty pieces of silver.

And the irony is that the one who sells for a trifle considers others dear. Those, too, whom not a few would just throw away, those on the outskirts, the not so wise. He even calls, recruits, some of them to follow him.

And it is not enough for him to feed others with loaves and fish. He also wants them to live by the word of God. That is why he eats, with his disciples, the Passover. There, they listen to God’s words and recount God’s works of wonder.

To so listen and recount means to unchain, set free, the word. It also makes for our obeying God, and not staying stubborn.

Jesus feeds us so that we may have life as we feed others.

At the Passover meal, Jesus also gives his body as food and his blood as drink. This sacrament sums up the mystery of his passion, death and resurrection for our salvation. That is to say, this Most Holy Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood lets us know this (SV.EN I:276):

We live in Jesus Christ through the death of Jesus Christ, and we must die in Jesus Christ through the life of Jesus Christ, and our life must be hidden in Jesus Christ and filled with Jesus Christ, and so as to die as Jesus Christ, we must live as Jesus Christ.

Yes, we live off Christ’s body and blood. And we who live so can, in turn, feed others, which means sacrifice. And the more we hide in Christ and stay in communion with him, the more he fills us to the brim. So that we get to live like him, giving of ourselves to others to the end.

Is not this what it means, at least in part, to say that the Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life? Of a life that is free, not chained by selfishness and greed?

Lord Jesus, be the one to teach, form and feed us, so that we too may get to teach, form and feed others, and live.

Alimentar a los demás primero

Jesús nos busca alimentar con su cuerpo y sangre, para que tengamos vida plena. Nos ama, sí, hasta el fin.

Seguramente, las treinta monedas de plata no le pueden sino alimentar aún más la codicia a Judas Iscariote. Pero el traidor vende a Jesús por nada, no lo tasa muy alto.

Y, de verdad, el vendido no se puede valuar como corresponde. Es que él es el heredero legítimo al trono de David, si bien viene humilde montado en un asno. No en un caballo de guerra. Con todo, no deja de ser el que tiene derecho a todo. Y, por lo tanto, puede requisar una borrica, una casa u otra cosa que necesita.

Tiene él también el poder de curar las enfermedades y dolencias de toda clase. Puede alimentar a miles con pocos panes y peces. No, no cabe duda de que él vale mucho más que treinta monedas de plata.

Y la ironía es que el que se vende por nada los toma por caros a los demás. A los que se toman por desechables también, a los que se hallan en las periferias, a los no sabios. Aun llama a unos de ellos para que le sigan.

Y no le basta con alimentar a los demás con panes y peces. Quiere también que los demás vivan de la palabra de Dios. Es por eso que come, junto con sus discípulos, la cena de Pascua. En ella, se escuchan las palabras de Dios y se hace recuerdo de las proezas de Dios.

Tal escuchar y recordar quiere decir dejar suelta, libre, la palabra. Esto lleva también a que obedezcamos a Dios, en vez de quedarnos tercos.

Nos alimenta Jesús para que tengamos vida al alimentar nosotros a los demás.

En la cena de Pascua, Jesús también da a comer cuerpo y a beber su sangre. Y en este sacramento se resume el misterio de su pasión, muerte y resurrección por nuestra salvación. Es decir, el Santísimo Sacramento del Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo nos da a conocer esto (SV.ES I:320):

Vivimos en Jesucristo por la muerte en Jesucristo, y hemos de morir en Jesucristo por la vida de Jesucristo, y nuestra vida tiene que estar oculta en Jesucristo y llena de Jesucristo, y, para morir como Jesucristo, hay que vivir como Jesucristo.

Vivimos, sí, del cuerpo y sangre de Cristo. Y a los que así vivimos, se nos hace capaces de alimentar a los demás, lo que supone sacrificio. Y cuanto más nos ocultamos en Cristo y quedamos en comunión con él, tanto más nos llena él, para que rebosemos de él. Para que vivamos al igual que él, entregados a los demás hasta el fin.

¿No es esto lo quiere decir, en parte al menos, el proclamar que la Eucaristía es fuente y culmen de toda la vida cristiana (CIC 1324-1327)? ¿De una vida libre, no presa del egoísmo y la codicia?

Señor Jesús, sé tú el que nos vaya a enseñar, formar y alimentar, para que logremos también enseñar, formar y alimentar a los demás, y vivamos.
