:''Hidden still is Jesus’ messiahship

'''Jesus is God’s Christ.  His being so remains hidden, however, from those who lack compassion.''' 

Jesus backtracks.  He keeps hidden once again his being the Messiah no sooner than he has revealed it through Peter’s confession of faith.  The Teacher directs his disciples not to speak to anyone of the confession.

One finds the reason for the prohibition in what Jesus says immediately:

:''The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.

No, Jesus does not want his disciples to announce that he is the Messiah without their understanding it well.  Better to keep it hidden than to announce it inaccurately.

To hit the mark, the disciples have to know, in the first place, that their Teacher is not the triumphalist messiah that people are expecting.  In the second place, every prospective disciple must take seriously what Jesus adds right away:

:''If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.
 
For today’s Christians, the message of the cross is no longer an obstacle or a folly.  In contrast to even the disciples, we take it for granted that our Messiah is none other than the Lord’s Suffering Servant.  We are resolved to know nothing except Jesus Christ crucified and not to boast but in Jesus Christ’s cross.

Yet our ethnocentrism continues unabated as we forget about the reconciliation of people that God brings about through Christ’s cross.  We demonize immigrants and certain religious groups.  We enact laws that make it harder for some sectors of society to exercise their right to vote.  We inch our way back to the times of slaves and freemen, of subjugating men and subjugated women, of the rich man and poor Lazarus. 

What kind of Messiah Jesus is still stays hidden, too, when we lose sight of the reason for Jesus’ anointing.  He is God’s Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One.  The Lord has anointed him with the Spirit for the mission of bringing the Good News to the poor.  Hence, if we dismiss the poor, we really do not confess Jesus as the Messiah crucified for the poor of all kinds.

To be a Christian and not take pity on the pierced ones, the afflicted and the marginalized is to be a caricature of a Christian ([http://via.library.depaul.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1036&context=vincentian_ebooks SV.EN XII:222]).  To celebrate the Supper of the Lord and cause division, this is not to see Christ’s face in the face of the poor.

:''Oculta aún está identidad mesiánica de Jesús

'''Jesús es el Mesías de Dios.  Su condición de Mesías permanece oculta, sin embargo, a las personas sin compasión.''' 

Da marcha atrás Jesús y oculta de nuevo su identidad mesiánica tan pronto que la descubre mediante la confesión de fe de Pedro.  El Maestro prohíbe terminantemente a los discípulos hablarle a nadie de la confesión.

El motivo de la prohibición se revela en lo que de inmediato dice Jesús a sus discípulos:

:''El Hijo del hombre tiene que padecer mucho, ser desechado por los ancianos, sumos sacerdotes y escribas, ser ejecutado y resucitar al tercer día.

No, no quiere Jesús que los discípulos anuncien su identidad mesiánica sin que ellos mismos la comprendan bien.  Mejor que quede oculta que anunciada desacertada.

Para acertar, han de saber los discípulos, en primer lugar, que su Maestro no es el Mesías triunfalista de las expectativas populares. Todo discípulo prospectivo, en segundo lugar, tendrá que tomar en serio lo que en seguida dice Jesús:

:''El que quiera seguirme, que se niegue a sí mismo, cargue con su cruz cada día y se venga conmigo.
 
Para los cristianos de hoy, el mensaje de la cruz ya no es ni escándalo ni locura.  A diferencia incluso de los discípulos mismos, nosotros damos por asentado que nuestro Mesías no es otro que el mismo Siervo Sufriente del Señor.  No nos preciamos de saber cosa alguna, sino a Jesucristo crucificado y de nada nos gloriamos sino de la cruz de Cristo.

Con todo, no disminuye nuestro etnocentrismo mientras nos olvidamos de la reconciliación de pueblos que Dios realiza mediante la cruz de Cristo.  Demonizamos a los inmigrantes y a ciertos grupos religiosos.  Promulgamos leyes que hacen más difícil el ejercicio del derecho de voto de parte de ciertos sectores de la sociedad.  Nuevamente, abrimos camino hacia los tiempos pasados de esclavos y libres, de hombres subyugantes y mujeres subyugadas, del hombre rico y del pobre Lázaro. 

Y se nos oculta la condición mesiánica de Jesús cuando perdemos de vista el motivo de la unción cristiana.  Jesús es el Mesías de Dios, el Ungido, el Cristo.  El Señor lo ha ungido con su Espíritu para la misión de dar la Buena Noticia a los pobres.  Así que si descartamos a los pobres, no lo confesamos realmente a Jesús como el Mesías, crucificado por los pobres de todo tipo.

Ser cristiano y no tener compasión por los traspasados, afligidos y marginados, «es ser cristiano en pintura» ([http://via.library.depaul.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1012&context=coste_sp SV.ES XI:561]).  Celebrar la Cena del Señor y causar divisiones, esto es no ver la faz de Cristo en el rostro del pobre.
