That is to say, they are opportunities [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Judith+8%3A25-27&version=RSVCE to know who we are and what we are made of].  To be [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Judith+8%3A25-27&version=RSVCE steadfast also, the best we can be, and whole].

God, yes, puts those who are his in the crucible.  And that is why [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Job+42%3A5&version=RSVCE their eyes, then, get to see him; they do not just know of him by hearing].  Christians, for their part, follow their Teacher and suffer with him.  Hence, [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews+5%3A8-10&version=RSVCE they learn to obey, and they become channels of salvation and sharers in Christ’s priesthood].

Of course, this is all true of Vincent de Paul.  God chooses him from those whom the world deems foolish, of no worth and throwable.  He gets the call to be, as Jesus, [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+5%3A20&version=RSVCE more just than the scribes and the Pharisees].  And to be [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+5%3A48&version=RSVCE perfect as their Father in heaven is perfect].  And to be of [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+11%3A25&version=RSVCE those to whom the Father shows what he hides from the wise].  But to be what the one who chooses or calls wants him to be, Vincent goes through testing.

It pains Father Vincent that he has yet to make better his family’s financial standing ([https://via.library.depaul.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1025&context=vincentian_ebooks SV.EN I], 15).  Such failure hurts him so much that it makes him weep bitterly.  Still and all, he does not lose hope in God’s grace.

He also puts his trusts wholly in God when a roommate wrongly accuses him of stealing money.  The accused and defamed and forced to live elsewhere does not defend himself; he just says, “God knows the truth.”

And as severe and strong doubts of faith torment him, Vincent digs deep within himself to hold on to faith.  Not able to say the creed, he writes it down on a piece of paper.  He puts the paper in the breast pocket of his cassock.  And he just touches the paper when doubts assail him.  That is how he deals with his doubts and feelings of being forsaken by God.  And this crucible of doubts and forsakenness turns out crucial for Vincent.  For it leads him to make the vow to live and die serving those who are poor.

And with that vow, the one who has sought to get away from those who are poor is now free of doubts.  He passes from darkness to light.  He gets to see clearly that he cannot but be of the poor, and so, of their Evangelizer.  For in them and in Jesus —nailed to the cross, giving up his body and shedding his blood— lies blessedness.

Estas palabras son sabias, y acendradas cual [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Salmo+12%3A7&version=BLP la plata aquilatada en el crisol].

Pues ellas nos enseñan que los [https://famvin.org/es/2017/08/31/las-pruebas-la-vida/ momentos de pruebas y contrariedades son a la vez momentos de gracia].  Es decir, son momentos oportunos [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Judit+8%3A25-27&version=DHH para que nos conozcamos, nos sondeemos y nos corrijamos a nosotros mismos].   También para que [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Santiago+1%3A2-4&version=BLP seamos firmes, perfectos y maduros].

A los de Dios, sí, se les pone en el crisol.  Y es por eso que luego [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=job+42%3A5&version=BLP logran sus ojos verle; no sabe de él solo de oídas].  Los cristianos, a su vez, siguen su Maestro y sufren con él.  Por lo tanto, [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebreo+5%3A8-10&version=BLP aprenden a obedecer, y se hacen instrumentos de la salvación y partícipes del sacerdocio de Cristo].

Por supuesto, todo esto se puede decir de Vicente de Paúl.  Dios, sí, lo escoge de entre los necios, despreciables y desechables a los ojos del mundo.  Se le llama a ser, al igual que Jesús, [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mateo+5%3A20&version=BLP
más justos que los escribas y los fariseos].  A ser [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mateo+5%3A48&version=BLP perfecto como es perfecto su Padre que está en el cielo].  Y ser de los que a los cuales se les [https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mateo+11%3A25&version=BLP da a conocer lo que se les esconde a los sabios].  Pero para cumplir con las expectativas del que le elige o le llama, Vicente pasa por unas pruebas.

Le da pena al Padre Vicente no conseguir él mejorar la situación económica de su familia ([https://via.library.depaul.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1000&context=coste_sp SV.ES I], 88).  Tal fracaso le duele tanto que le hace llorar de forma amarga.  Con todo, no deja él de esperar en la gracia de Dios.

También en Dios confía del todo Vicente al acusarle erróneamente un compañero de cuarto de robo de dinero.  No se justifica el acusado y difamado y forzado a cambiar de vivienda; dice no más:  «Dios sabe la verdad».

Y cuando le atormentan graves y fuertes dudas de fe, Vicente retoma fuerzas para afferarse a la fe.  Como no puede ni decir el credo, lo escribe en un papel.  Ese papel lo coloca él sobre su pecho, en el bolsillo de la sotana.  Y lo toca con la mano derecha para expresar su fe en los momentos de duda.  Así supera el tentado contra la fe sus dudas y sus sentimientos de que Dios lo ha abandonado.  Y ese crisol de dudas y derelicción le resulta decisivo.  Pues le lleva a hacer el voto de vivir y morir en el servicio de los pobres.

Y tras hacer el voto, se libra de las dudas el que se ha buscado apartarse de los pobres.  Pasa él de las tinieblas a la luz.  Ve ahora con claridad que no puede sino ser de los pobres y, por lo tanto, del Evangelizador de ellos.  Pues en ellos y en Jesús, —crucificado, entregando su cuerpo y derramando su sangre—, está la bienaventuranza.
