Our Lord reveals himself to the clean of heart who show interest in him.  He offers them, “Come, and you will see.”  He welcomes them to his private space.  He opens himself to them completely, making himself vulnerable.
 
Both the invitation and the interest of the invited make clear that knowing Jesus is not a do-it-yourself job.  It is not a project that a self-taught individual can do by himself.
 
Those who want to know the Lamb of God will need someone to point him out to them first.  Above all, they are going to need the Rabbi who will communicate to them the word of God and teach them to hear and do it—so that they may thus acquire intimacy with him, knowing him up close.

Christian discipleship supposes honest and bold dialogue (cf. [http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/speeches/2014/october/documents/papa-francesco_20141006_padri-sinodali.html Pope Francis]).  It is incompatible with solipsism that makes for [http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/speeches/2014/october/documents/papa-francesco_20141018_conclusione-sinodo-dei-vescovi.html  “hostile inflexibility” and “destructive tendency to goodness”] (do-goodism).  We cannot be self-absorbed without closing ourselves to those who can help us.  No wonder, then, that the word of the Lord was rare and there were not many visions toward the end of Eli’s judgeship, so locked up in their own interests were the priests even.  And when divine word and visions are missing, the people stray and perish.

Enclosed in ourselves, we are condemned to our own weaknesses, stupidities, limitations, pettiness and unrighteousness.  Failure and ruin await us when we are left to our evil inclinations and caprices.  Only God, “the immutable light, very different from all light whatever” (St. Augustine) can free us from our dark prison, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
 
Because Jesus calls, he breaks our deafness.  He shines, that is why our blindness is dispelled.  What is especially good about our Teacher is that he practices what he preaches.  He evangelizes by words and works; he infects more than he teaches doctrines.

Finding the Messiah, then, is not so much a matter of doctrine as of communion, so that his Spirit may enliven us and that the sap itself of the vine may flow in the branches.  It is about remembering the offering and the wounds through which we are healed, so that we may remember that “we live in Jesus Christ by the death of Jesus Christ and that we ought to die in Jesus Christ by the life of Jesus Christ and that our life ought to be hidden in Jesus Christ and full of Jesus Christ and that in order to die like Jesus Christ it is necessary to live like Jesus Christ” (St. Vincent de Paul; I:295).

:''El que se une al Señor es un espíritu con él (1 Cor 6, 17)

Se revela nuestro Señor a los limpios de corazón que se interesan por él.  Les ofrece:  «Venid y veréis».  Los acoge a su espacio privado.  Se les abre completamente, haciéndose vulnerable.
 
Tanto la invitación como el interés de los invitados dejan claro que conocer a Jesús no es un trabajo de bricolaje.  No es un proyecto que un autodidacta pueda realizar por cuenta propia.

Quienes quieran conocer al Cordero de Dios necesitarán a alguien que se lo señale primero.  Van a necesitar sobre todo al Rabí mismo que les comunique la palabra de Dios y les enseñe a oírla y cumplirla—para que así se hagan íntimos de él, conociéndole de cerca.

El discipulado cristiano supone diálogo honesto y sin timidez (cf. [http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/es/speeches/2014/october/documents/papa-francesco_20141006_padri-sinodali.html  Papa Francisco]).  Es incompatible con el solipsismo que conduce al [http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/es/speeches/2014/october/documents/papa-francesco_20141018_conclusione-sinodo-dei-vescovi.html ''endurecimiento hostil y al buenismo destructivo''].  No podemos ensimismarnos sin cerrarnos a quienes nos puedan ayudar.  No era de extrañar, pues, que fuera rara la palabra de Dios a fines de la judicatura de Elí y no abundasen las visiones, tan encerrados que estaban en sus intereses incluso los mismos sacerdotes.  Y cuando faltan la palabra divina y las visiones, el pueblo se extravía y perece.

Encerrados los hombres en nosotros mismos, nos condenamos a nuestras debilidades, torpezas, limitaciones, pequeñeces e injusticias.  Fracaso y ruina nos esperan a los abadonados a nuestras malas tendencias y a nuestros caprichos.  De nuestra cárcel oscura, solo nos puede librar Dios, la «luz inconmutable muy distinta e infinitamente superior» a toda luz (san Agustín), mediante Jesucristo nuestro Señor.

Porque Jesús nos llama, se quebranta nuestra sordera.  Él resplandece, por eso se cura nuestra ceguera.  Lo bueno especialmente de nuestro Maestro es que hace lo que dice.  Evangeliza de palabra y de obra; contagia más que adoctrina.

Encontrar, pues, al Mesías no es tanto cuestión de doctrina como de comunión, para que su Espíritu nos aliente y la misma savia de la vid fluya por los sarmientos.  Se trata de hacer memoria de la ofrenda y las llagas, por las que nos sanamos, para que nos acordemos de que «vivimos en Jesucristo por la muerte de Jesucristo, y que hemos de morir en Jesucristo por la vida de Jesucristo, y que nuestra vida tiene que estar oculta en Jesucristo y llena de Jesucristo , y que, para morir como Jesucristo, hay que vivir como Jesucristo» (san Vicente de Paúl; I:320).
