Christians should seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.  To make sure we start out well and end successfully, all we need to do is follow Jesus.

Jesus begins his public ministry confirming the preaching of his Forerunner:  “Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand.”  So then, needless to say, we who claim to be his disciples will begin well by taking repentance as our starting-point.

And Jesus concretizes the meaning of repentance.  It is to put him ahead of our nets, boats and immediate relatives even.

Repentance means agreement with the one who proclaims blessed what this age considers accursed.  He appoints us as salt of the earth and light of the world, part of the solution, not the problem.  He also expects our righteousness to be so radical that it reflects divine perfection.  Moreover, he demands sincere almsgiving, prayer and fasting.

Jesus is not at all like the wealthy who burn themselves out amassing riches.  He warns, in fact, “You cannot serve God and mammon.”  His poverty is, effectively, a judgment against the greedy who always see to it that they have more than what they have already hoarded.  His simple lifestyle condemns also those who wear themselves out looking for greater comfort.  He upholds as well the freeing principle that wealth is for human beings.
 
That is why our Teacher is not among the teachers who love money and mock his warning.  But mockery does not stop him from carrying out till the end his mission to evangelize the poor.

Yes, the Poor One is the Good News to the poor.  He encourages them, saying that they are more important than the birds and the lilies.  Our heavenly Father takes care of the birds and the lilies; undoubtedly, he takes care, too, of the poor.

And his example proves his teaching.  The start of his ministry shows that he goes to work right away; trust in God does not mean idleness.  He goes around “all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, announcing the Gospel of the Kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people.”

Yet he works joyfully and peacefully, without worrying.  And that is so, since his trust in Providence assures him that those who seek find in the end.

Do we trust so?  Specifically, do we really trust that God never forgets us?  Are we faithful servants of Christ besides?  Or do we worry more about our interests and possessions (see [http://via.library.depaul.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1028&context=vincentian_ebooks SV.EN III:527])?

'''Jesús es el inicio y el término de nuestra búsqueda del Reino de Dios y su justicia.'''

Los cristianos debemos buscar sobre todo el Reino de Dios y su justicia.  Para asegurarnos un buen comienzo y el feliz término, solo necesitamos seguir a Jesús.

Jesús inicia su ministerio público confirmando la predicación de su Precursor:  «Convertíos, porque está cerca el Reino de los cielos».  Huelga decir, pues, que comenzaremos bien los que nos decimos discípulos teniendo la conversión como punto de partida.

Y se nos va concretando lo que la conversión significa.  Es anteponer el seguimiento de Jesús a las redes, las barcas e incluso a nuestros familiares.

La conversión implica también ajustarnos al que proclama dichoso lo que el mundo toma por desdichado.  Nos designa él sal de la tierra y luz del mundo, parte de la solución y no del problema.  Espera además que nuestra justicia sea tan radical que refleje la perfección divina.  Asimismo, exige que sean sinceras nuestras limosnas, oraciones y ayunos.

Jesús no es para nada como los ricos que se consumen acumulando riquezas.  De hecho, advierte:  «No podéis servir a Dios y al dinero».  Su pobreza juzga efectivamente a los codiciosos que siempre procuran poseer más de lo que ya tienen amontonado.  Su estilo de vida sencilla condena a los acomodados que se agotan buscando mayor bienestar.  Jesús sostiene además el principio liberador de que la riqueza es para el hombre.
 
Y el Maestro, claro, no se cuenta entre los maestros amantes del dinero, quienes se burlan de la advertencia.  Pero las burlas no le impiden llevar a pleno término su misión de evangelizar a los pobres.

El Pobre, sí, es la Buena Nueva a los pobres.  Los alienta, diciéndoles que valen más que los pájaros y los lirios.  El Padre celestial cuida de los pájaros y los lirios; indudablemente, cuida también de los pobres.

Y su enseñanza queda acreditada por su ejemplo.  El inicio de su ministerio demuestra que él se pone a trabajar inmediatamente; no es ocioso quien confía en Dios.  Jesús recorre «toda Galilea, enseñando en las sinagogas y proclamando el Evangelio del reino, curando las enfermedades y dolencias del pueblo».  

Pero trabaja con alegría y paz, sin agobiarse.  Su confianza total en la Providencia le da certeza de que quienes busquen llegarán al término deseado.

¿Es así nuestra confianza?  En concreto, ¿confiamos que Dios jamás se olvida de nosotros?  ¿Que alcanzaremos el término anhelado, aunque pasemos hambre, persecución o muerte?  ¿Somos servidores fieles de Cristo o nos preocupamos más por nuestros intereses y posesiones (véase [http://via.library.depaul.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1002&context=coste_sp SV.ES III:488-489])?
