'''Jesus shares with us his anointing and mission to bring the Good News to the poor.  He gives tasks to each one according to one’s ability.'''

By the grace of God, we have the ability to believe in Jesus.  But when he comes after a long time, will he find faith on earth?

Will we still have this ability though we have been waiting a long time for our Savior’s coming?  Or will we let up, disappointed that our hope may have cheated us of the happiness of the now?  Will not our hearts grow cold as we face many trials, woes and crises?

It is due to such questions that the Church urges us today to live up our potential.  We are to add to the goods that Jesus entrusts us according to our ability.  That is to say, to keep alive our faith, hope and love means to trade with our gifts from Jesus.

And to trade with them can mean God’s challenge to “those who believe in him to ‘go forth’” ([http://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/apost_exhortations/documents/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium.html ''EG''] 20).  For our call is to leave our own comfort zone.  We are challenged “to reach all the ‘peripheries’ in need of the light of the Gospel.”

Of course, such outreach means risks.  That is so since we can end up bruised, hurt and dirty ([http://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/apost_exhortations/documents/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium.html ''EG''] 49; see also 45 and 88).  But it is better for one to take such risks than to be sick from being closed.  From clinging to one’s security.  One cannot be like the snails who shut themselves in their shells ([https://via.library.depaul.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1036&context=vincentian_ebooks SV.EN XII]:81).

Rightly, then, does the Master judge the wicked, lazy and fearful servant who buries his talent in the ground.  He neither stirs grace into flame nor grasps that God has not given us a spirit of cowardice (2 Tim 1, 6-7).

But the truth is that God has given us a spirit of power, love and self-control.  And love drives out fear (1 Jn 4, 18).  Self-control, in turn, helps us find out Jesus’ will.  And power, for its part, drives us to do what is right.

Each Christian, yes, must know the path that the Lord points out ([http://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/apost_exhortations/documents/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium.html ''EG''] 20).  “Each in his or her own way,” for it is not enough for us to just copy ([http://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/apost_exhortations/documents/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20180319_gaudete-et-exsultate.html ''GE''] 11; see also [https://johnfreund.net/2020/10/25/god-is-in-the-details/ “God Is In The Detail”]). '''Jesús nos comparte su unción y su misión de llevar la Buena Nueva a los pobres.  Le encarga a cada uno tareas según su capacidad.'''

Por la gracia de Dios, tenemos la capacidad de creer en Jesús.  Pero cuando venga al cabo de mucho tiempo, ¿encontrará él esta fe en la tierra?

¿Mantendremos esta capacidad los que llevamos muchos años en vela de la venida del Salvador?  O, ¿cejaremos decepcionados que, por esperar, se nos haya arrebatado la felicidad del presente?  Y, ¿no se nos enfriará a nosotros el amor frente a tantas pruebas, miserias y crisis?

Se debe a tales interrogantes que se nos urge hoy a llevar a cabo nuestras posibilidades.  Nos toca, sí, añadir a los bienes que Jesús nos encarga según nuestra capacidad.  Es decir, avivar la fe, la esperanza y el amor quiere decir negociar con los bienes de Jesús.

Y negociar se puede referir a la «“salida” que Dios quiere provocar en los creyentes» ([http://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/es/apost_exhortations/documents/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium.html ''EG''] 20).  Pues se nos llama a salir de la propia comodidad.  Se nos reta a la vez a atrevernos «a llegar a todas las periferias que necesitan la luz del Evangelio».

Claro, la salida supone riesgos.  Es que podemos acabar accidentados, heridos y manchados ([http://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/es/apost_exhortations/documents/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium.html ''EG''] 49; véanse también 45 y 88).  Pero es mejor arriesgarse así uno que estar enfermo «por el encierro y la comodidad de aferrarse a las propias seguridades».  Uno no ha de ser como los caracoles que se encierran en su concha ([https://via.library.depaul.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1011&context=coste_sp SV.ES XI]:397).

Con razón, pues, se le juzga al siervo negligente, holgazán y cobarde que esconde su talento bajo tierra.  No aviva él el fuego de la gracia ni capta que Dios no nos ha dado un espíritu cobarde (2 Tim 1, 6-7).

La verdad es que se nos ha dado un espíritu de fuerza, amor y buen juicio.  Y el amor elimina el temor (1 Jn 4, 18).  El buen juicio, a su vez, nos lleva a acertar la voluntad de Jesús.  Y la fuerza, por su parte, nos impulsa a hacer el bien.

Cada cristiano, sí, tendrá que discernir cuál es el camino que el Señor le pide ([http://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/es/apost_exhortations/documents/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium.html ''EG''] 20).  «Cada uno por su camino»; no nos basta con solo copiar  ([http://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/es/apost_exhortations/documents/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20180319_gaudete-et-exsultate.html ''GE''] 11; véase también [https://johnfreund.net/2020/10/25/god-is-in-the-details/ “God Is In The Detail”]).  Cristo enseñó a [https://famvin.org/wiki/Ordinary_Time_20,_Year_C Francisco de Asís] qué hacer; que Cristo nos enseñe también nuestra parte.
