Jesus teaches that it will be difficult for the wealthy to enter the kingdom of God.  The Pharisees, for their part, consider tax collectors sinners that one should anathematize; one cannot be their guest.  That is why one can say that Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector and a wealthy man, faces a double risk of perdition.

Nevertheless, the one who, being short in stature, climbs a sycamore tree seeking to see Jesus receives a cordial treatment.  Jesus tells him, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.”  So, Jesus introduces himself just like that as an uninvited guest.

Perhaps, that is how Jesus concretizes his teaching, “The one who seeks, finds.”  But surely, thus does he make clear that even the worst sinner is within the reach of the one who seeks and saves the lost.  He still gives the opportunity to repent to someone who is or seems wholly detestable and irredeemable.

And the reality is that there are irreligious people who are entering the kingdom of God ahead of religious practitioners.  The rich who have apparently passed through the eye of a needle are not few either.  But whether the repentant are of the first group or the second, their conversion means commitment to the poor.

The beatitudes make up Jesus’ fundamental teaching.  They also accurately describe what is essential in Jesus’ life and ministry.  Hence, we who claim to be repentant prove ourselves through our conformity to the beatitudes.  Living up to the beatitudes, we also show we are worthy of our calling.

Conformed to the beatitudes, we will let go of impiety and the wealth that make us uncaring.  And the presence of our guest will be saving for us.  Yes, welcoming Jesus as a guest is genuine to the extent that we lead a life of justice and love.  In the house of sinners where he stays, Jesus does not leave things as he finds them.  He wants those who welcome him as their guest to assist the poor also in every way (cf. [http://via.library.depaul.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1036&context=vincentian_ebooks SV.EN XII:77]). 

Before Jesus, we will always be short in stature, of course, or as a grain from a balance.  But what difference does it make?  It is enough that he declares that salvation has come to our house, because we too are descendants of the Father of believers.  Welcoming Jesus as our guest in the person of the poor, we await the day when we will be his guests in the heavenly banquet.

Enseña Jesús que les va a ser difícil a los ricos entrar en el reino de Dios.  Los fariseos, por su parte, toman a los publicanos por pecadores que hay que proscribir; uno no puede ser huésped de ellos.  Es por eso que se puede decir que Zaqueo, jefe de publicanos y rico, corre doble riesgo de perdición.

Con todo, queda tratado cordialmente el de baja estatura que se ha subido a un árbol buscando ver a Jesús.  Le dice Jesús:  «Zaqueo, baja en seguida, porque hoy tengo que alojarme en tu casa».  Así que, sin más, se presenta Jesús como huésped no invitado.

Así concreta quizás Jesús su enseñanza:  «Quien busca, halla».  Pero seguramente así se nos aclara que incluso el peor pecador está al alcance del Buscador y Salvador del perdido.  Ofrece todavía la oportunidad para convertirse al que es o parece totalmente despreciable e insalvable.

De hecho, hay personas irreligiosas que van delante de los observantes religiosos hacia el reino de Dios.  Y no son pocos los ricos que demuestran que han pasado, por lo visto, por el ojo de una aguja.  Pero sean los convertidos del primer grupo o del segundo, su conversión significa un compromiso en favor de los pobres.

Las bienaventuranzas constituyen la enseñanza fundamental de Jesús.  Ellas describen también con acierto lo propio de su vida y su ministerio.  Por tanto, los que nos decimos convertidos a Jesús nos acreditamos por nuestra conformidad con las bienaventuranzas.  Viviéndolas, también nos mostramos dignos de nuestra vocación.

Conformándonos con las bienaventuranzas, dejaremos de ser irreligiosos o ricos indiferentes.  Y así la presencia  de nuestro huésped, nos resultará salvadora.  Sí, nuestro hospedaje de Jesús es auténtico en la medida en que llevamos una vida de justicia y amor.  No como las encuentra deja Jesús las cosas en la casa de pecadores en la que se aloja.  Exige que de todas las maneras asistan también a los pobres quienes lo hospedan (véase [http://via.library.depaul.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1011&context=coste_sp SV.ES XI:393]). 

Ante Jesús, siempre seremos pequeños de estatura, claro, o como un grano de arena en la balanza.  Pero, ¿qué más da?  Basta que él declare que ha llegado la salvación a nuestra casa, que también somos hijos del Padre de los creyentes.  Y hospedándole a Jesús en la persona de los pobres, esperamos el día cuando seremos sus convidados en el banquete celestial.
