Those Jews who were imbued with a deep and burning sense of expectation prayed in the words of the prophet Isaiah, “Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down.”  We Christians believe, of course, that this fervent desire was manifested as fulfilled when the heavens were torn open and the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus at his baptism.

But such manifestation of Jesus as the divine irruption into human history, it turned out, was met with incredulity and even hostility by the majority of those who prayed so.  The one manifested did not meet the messianic expectations of the people

The Jewish people were waiting, by and large, for a political and militant messiah who would liberate them from the hated Romans, wresting power from the hands of foreign invaders.  The messiah, then, would have to be mightier than the uncircumcised conquerors.

And, yes, St. John the Baptist acknowledged Jesus to be mightier than he, but the might of the baptized, according to the statement of the voice that was heard, was different from the might that depended on weapons, horses and chariots of war, on physical strength.  The power of the one who was confirmed to be the beloved Son was proper of the chosen and pleasing servant who was upheld by the Lord God.

In contrast to the members of the royalty who craved for people’s loud and pompous acclamations, the servant neither cried out nor shouted nor made his voice heard in the street.  Humble and quiet, the Lord God’s favorite had no overbearing need to show off, to demonstrate his power by getting rid of the bruised, the faint-hearted, the marginalized, the unclean, the schismatic, the heretic.  Weak and long-suffering, he was strong and joyful.  Precisely because of his weakness and because of the cup he drunk and the baptism he was baptized with, the one God anointed with the Holy Spirit and power was able to bring about salvation for all, establishing justice on the earth and offering hope and instruction even to island- or coast-dwellers who were usually disdained as crypto-Israelites, that is, of dubious Jewish faith [1].  Thus was Jesus revealed as the true Son of the one the God who shows no partiality but accepts all those in every nation who fear him and act uprightly.

And now I who say without much difficulty, almost glibly, that I believe God rent the heavens and came down when Jesus was baptized—do I really point to Jesus of Nazareth and proclaim him as crucified?  Have I truly resolved to know nothing except Jesus Christ, and him crucified?  Have I not been diverted from following the advice of St. Vincent de Paul [2] to the effect that “our primary aim is to acquire the learning of the saints, which is taught in the school of the cross”?   Do I receive him who invites his vigilant and faithful servants to his table, girds himself to wash their feet and to serve them food?

Bautismo del Señor, Año B-2012

:''Ni aun el Hijo del hombre vino para ser servido, sino para servir (Mc. 10, 45)

Los judíos imbuidos de profundo y ardiente sentido de expectación suplicaban a Dios en palabras del profeta Isaías:  «Ojalá rasgaras el cielo y bajases».  Creemos los cristianos, desde luego, que este deseo fervoroso se manifestó cumplido cuando, al bautizarse Jesús, se rasgó el cielo y bajó sobre él el Espíritu Santo.

Pero resultó que esta manifestación de Jesús como la irrupción divina en la historia humana se recibió con incredulidad, y hasta con hostilidad, de parte de la mayoría de dichos suplicantes.  El manifestado no estaba a la altura de las esperanzas mesiánicas populares.

El pueblo judío en general esperaba a un mesías político y guerrero quien los librara de los odiados romanos, arrebatando el poder de las manos de estos invasores extranjeros.  El mesías, pues, tendría que ser más poderoso que los conquistadores incircuncisos.

Y sí san Juan Bautista reconoció que Jesús podia más que él, pero el poder del bautizado, según la declaración de la voz celestial, era distinto al poder dependiente de las armas, de los caballos y los carros de guerra, del vigor o fuerza corporal.  El poder del que fue confirmado Hijo amado era propio del siervo, elegido y preferido, y sostenido por el Señor Dios.

A diferencia de los con títulos de realeza que se morían por las aclamaciones bulliciosas y ostentosas de la gente, el siervo no gritaba ni clamaba ni voceaba por las calles.  Humilde y sosegado, el predilecto del Señor Dios no tenía la imperiosa necesidad de lucirse, de mostrarse poderoso por medio de eliminar a los quebrados, los pusilánimes, los marginados de la sociedad, los inmundos, los cismáticos o los herejes.  Él era fuerte y gozoso siendo débil y sufrido.  Precisamente por su debilidad y por la copa que bebió y el bautismo con que se bautizó, el ungido por Dios con la fuerza del Espíritu Santo logró para todos la salvación, implantando el derecho en la tierra e incluso dándoles esperanza y enseñanza a isleños o costeños, desdeñados por lo general como israelitas crípticos, es decir, de cuestionable fe judía.  Y así Jesús se reveló como hijo verdadero del que no hace distinciones, sino que acepta a todos los que lo temen y practican la justicia.

Ahora bien, yo que digo sin mucha dificultad, y casi locuazmente, que creo que Dios rasgó el cielo y bajó cuando Jesús se bautizó, ¿me refiero de verdad a Jesús de Nazaret y proclamo a Cristo crucificado?  ¿Acaso no me he propuesto saber de otro mesías, aparte del crucificado?  ¿No me he desviado del consejo de san Vicente de Paúl (RC XII, 8) de «aprender principalmente la ciencia de los santos, que se enseña en la escuela de la Cruz»?  ¿Recibo yo realmente al que convida a su mesa a sus siervos vigilantes y fieles, se pone el delantal, él mismo les lava los pies, y les sirve la comida?
