Richard Benson
On June 22, 1993, Fr. Benson successfully defended his doctoral dissertation "Unwinding the Double Helix. The Ethical and Theological Implications of the Human Genome Projects: A Moral Analysis from a Personalist and Interdisciplinary Perspective." He has presented papers on genetics and ethics at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, the European Society of Human Genetics in Elsinore, Denmark and the Human Genome Organization in Frankfort, Germany, to name only a few. He has held administrative posts within his Vincentian community, including Superior of St. Vincent’s Seminary in Montebello. Fr. Benson has served as visiting professor of Bioethics at Mount St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles and at De Paul University’s School of Law in Chicago. He serves currently on the Theological Commission for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Fr. Benson is a member of the Society of Christian Ethics, the Catholic Theological Society of America, the American Academy of Science, and the European Society of Human Genetics.
