These ideas, for instance, strike us as odd:  to die is to live, loss is gain, to serve is to rule, poverty is wealth, weakness is strength.

Though odd, we still accept and respect them.  Besides, we assent to them, though to live up to them is another thing.

Yet crucial is this “another thing.”  That is to say, to live up to these odd teachings is what makes us believe and hold them as true.  We believe and hold them so most of all since Jesus embodies them.

Yes, of the Risen One is the glory, for he suffered death for all (Heb 2, 9).  And, of course, it is not that he appeases God’s wrath. Can God, who is love, be so cruel and thirsty for his Son’s blood?

No, Jesus does not save us from God’s wrath, but from men’s wrath.  It is enough to look at Jesus on the cross to see how angry and harsh we men can be.

But it is enough also to look at him on the cross to grasp the great love he shows us.  And we can love like him if the way we live and die matches his.  He loves us madly to the end; he does not come down from the cross to save himself.

Held there so, he makes clear that only through love can we live and die safe and sound. To live in Jesus’ love means to look out not for our own interests, but for others’ interests.  And to die in his love is to put to death all envy, showing off, greed, squabbling ambition. To live and die in his love is for us to love one another.  And to not bite and devour each other, so we may be saved from self-destruction.

To live and die like Jesus is to let his love take hold of us so we may be like Mary Magdalen.  She finds no rest till she meets her Beloved.  Or be like the disciple whom Jesus loves.  He has no name; he stands for all true believers.  Love frees him from blindness; he sees and believes.  The same thing will happen to Mary later.

Jesus also wants us to open our eyes so we may discern his body.  For he does not want us to eat and drink our own judgment for failing to live what we recall in the Eucharist.  That is, for lack of concern.  For shaming and letting go hungry those who are poor, while others boast and get drunk.

Hay en el Nuevo Testamento [http://www.vincentians.com/es/un-signo-boca-abajo-una-iglesia-de-paradojas enseñanzas paradójicas].  Nos chocan, por ejemplo, ideas como:  morir es vivir, perder es ganar, servir es mandar, ser pobre es ser rico, ser débil es ser fuerte.

A pesar de ser extrañas esas enseñanzas, las aceptamos y respetamos.  Y lo que es más, nos adherimos a ellas con fe, si bien ajustar nuestro vivir a ellas es otra cosa.

Pero lo decisivo es esta «otra cosa».  Es decir, el vivir conforme a esas enseñanzas curiosas es lo que hace que ellas nos resulten creíbles y veraces.  Creíbles y veraces, primero que nada, pues las encarna Jesús.

Sí, del resucitado es la gloria por haber sufrido él la muerte en favor de todos (Heb 2, 9).  Y claro, no es que él aplaque la ira de Dios.  Pues si fuera así, [https://famvin.org/wiki/Palm_Sunday,_Year_B-2018 nos enredaríamos en lo absurdo y herético:  Cristo nos salva de Dios].  ¿Puede Dios, que es amor, ser tan cruel, sediento de la sangre del propio Hijo?

No, no nos salva Jesús de la ira de Dios, sino de la ira de los hombres.  Y nos basta con mirar a Jesús en la cruz para ver lo airados y duros que los hombres podemos ser.

Pero también nos basta con mirarle en la cruz para captar el amor grande que él nos muestra.  Y de amor similar seremos capaces si nos ajustamos a su modo de vivir y morir.  Loco de amor, ama él hasta el fin no baja de la cruz para salvarse.

Vivir en el amor de Jesús quiere decir no dejarnos encerrar en nuestros intereses, sino buscar los intereses de los demás. Vivir y morir en su amor es amarnos unos a otros.  Y no andar mordiéndonos, devorándonos unos a otros, sino salvarnos de la autodestrucción.

Vivir y morir como Jesús es dejarnos llevar por su amor y ser como María Magdalena.  Le falta sosiego hasta que halle al Amado.  O como el discípulo al que quiere Jesús.  Es anónimo; él es todo verdadero creyente.  El amor lo libra de la ceguera y lo hace ver y creer.  Lo mismo le pasará más tarde a María.

Y busca Jesús que el amor nos abra los ojos y discernamos su cuerpo.  Es que no quiere que comamos ni bebamos nuestro propio juicio por no vivir lo que se recuerda en la Eucaristía.  Es decir, por la indiferencia, por dejar que pasen vergüenza y hambre los pobres, mientras los demás se jactan y se embriagan.
